His indian name was "Wah-Pa-Pe-Tah" - which means all over white, as he was born in winter when the ground was white with snow. Info provided by: Jack Gilchrist ---------------- Death of Peter Bondy - Peru Republican Word came to Peru Monday morning that Peter Bondy, a well known and highly respected Indian, had died suddenly about midnight. At the time of his death he was on a visit to William Godfrey. A fall was heard on the ground floor, where he slept, and on coming down stairs he was found dead. It is supposed his death was caused by valvular disease of the heart induced by rheumatism, from which he had long been a sufferer. Mr Bondy was born in 1817 on the headwaters of Eel river, north Fort Wayne, not far from where town of Butler now stands. His father was a Canadian Frenchman, Antoine Bondy, an Indian trader. His mother was a Mohican. He came to this county in 1840 and was adopted, by the Mianiis. He married Oza-wah-shing- qua, the youngest daughter of Frances Slocum, being her fifth husband, who bore him seven children and died in 1877. A later marriage to Mrs W Kisseman was uncongenial and they separated. Mr Bondy was a member of the Baptist church, which he joined many years ago under the preaching of George R Slocum, a nephew of the "white woman" who came out and lived here after her discovery. Mr Bondy was a quiet man of a kindly disposition and gave more evidence of his Indian than of his French ancestry. He leaves a large number of descendants. The funeral took place on Tuesday.
