Dr. Robert Ernest Smith, Sr., 97, of 188 Misty Meadows Drive, Saluda, husband of Joshlyn Edwards Smith died May 21, 2013 at NHC Parklane in Columbia. Born in Donalds, June 23, 1915, he was a son of the late Joe Wilhite and Pauline Elizabeth Austin Smith. During the early years of his life Robert worked on a farm where he developed a strong and healthy body along with a questing mind. He graduated Due West High School in 1932 in the depth of the Great Depression and due to the Depression was unable to enter college until the fall of 1935 when he entered Erskine College. He was on the baseball team where he was the pitcher. However, Robert considered his greatest accomplishment at Erskine to be finding the love of his life, Margaret Robinson of Lancaster who became his wife of fifty-eight years in June of 1942. After graduation, Robert entered Columbia Seminary in 1939 where he served as student body president his senior year and served as faculty, teaching beginners Greek. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1942. He was awarded a scholarship to further his education and he decided to attend Princeton where he earned a Master's of Divinity degree and in 1971 was honored to receive an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Erskine College. Before going to Princeton, he and Margaret were married. Together they became dedicated to ministry. Robert often said that Margaret's love and dedication were the finest assets to his ministry. They served three pastorates; Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, GA (6 years), First Presbyterian Church in Cedartown, GA (6 years); and Sion Presbyterian Church in Winnsboro, SC (26 years). After retiring in 1980 Robert was named Pastor Emeritus. Throughout his ministry, Robert served numerous times as Director of the Conference Youth Camp. While in Winnsboro he served as Chairman of the Presbytery Missionary Committee and on the General Assembly's Council on Theology and Culture. Robert was always looking to help better the community in which he lived. In Winnsboro he served many years as Chairman of the Hospital Commission and also served for many years as the Chairman of the Fairfield County Registration and Election Commission. After retiring, Robert and Margaret moved back to Due West to his family's farm. While there he served several Interim Pastor positions during which time his beloved wife passed away in 1998. While serving as Interim Pastor at Saluda Presbyterian Church he met Joshlyn Edwards von Szalatnay, an Elder of the church. The two were married in 1999 and had a wonderful thirteen years together. Robert was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He also loved golfing and watching team sports. In addition to his first wife, Margaret Robinson Smith, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Smith Fielding; son, William Mack Smith; three brothers; and three sisters. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Dr. Robert E. Smith, Jr. and wife Ti of Columbia; daughters, Carolyn S. Stevenson and husband Eben of Ridgeway, Sallie S. Alexander and husband Charles of Greenville; and stepson, Dr. Josh von Szalatnay of Thailand; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Greenville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Merwyn Johnson and Rev. Jonathan Bowling officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church Tuesday at 1:00PM. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends Tuesday immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Ralph Riley and the Riley Family Practice and the staff of Hospice Care of Tri-County. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Margaret Robinson Smith Scholarship Fund at Erskine College, 2 Washington Street, Due West, SC 29639, to the Joshlyn Edwards Smith Scholarship Fund at Thornwell Home for Children, 302 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325 or to Saluda Presbyterian Church, c/o Jean E.
