"Soon after coming to Fairfield county, Ohio, he entered the store of Gilgert McFadden, in Rushville, Ohio, as an apprentice. This store was on the stage line, between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. It was his duty to stay in the store both day and night, so that he might attend to the mail which often arrived in the middle of the night. Later he went to Circleville, Ohio, where he kept books and taught schools nearby." "In 1837, he joined the Methodist Church at Rushville, Ohio, later, he studied for the ministry, and was admitted to the Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In this work he spent four years as an itinerant preacher in central and southern Ohio. Because of poor health he retired from the ministry, and went into the nursery business on his farm near Bremen, Ohio, making a special study of fruit trees. Along with the nursery business he wrote articles for the leading agricultural papers of our country, such as" "Rural New Yorker", "Prairie Farmer", "Country Gentleman", and "National Stockman and Farmer" He was the Horticultural Editor of the latter paper for about thirty years previous and until his death. We quote below from an article by E.S. Bayard, editor of the "National Stockman and Farmer", in their issue of May 15th, 1913: "On Thursday, May 8th, Robert J. Black laid down his work in this world. We have no particulars, but his final illness must have been short, for only a few days have elapsed since we recived a letter from him, urging the planting of fruit trees, even though late in season, provided they could have proper subsequent care. The last two articles he wrote for us are given this week. In one the,"The Sun Dial"--he speaks of "The Enduring Light" of the Better Land--something that we do not remember that he ever mentioned before, except in private correspondence. Perhaps he felt the presence of the Shadow even then." "In all our experience with him, we have never detected in him any impatience, fault-finding captious criticism, carelessness in his work, or disregard for facts or for the conscientious opinion of others. His nature was kindly, and his soul above the petty things that fret and irritate in the daily course of life.
