Eslick, a former resident of this place, passed away at his home just north of Madrid on the old state road Tuesday of last week, death being caused by a cerebral hemorrhage which came following an illness of several months. After a short service at the home last Thursday, the remains were brought to Stratford where funeral services in charge of Rev. Fisher, pastor of the United Brethren church in Webster City, were conducted in the M.E. church. Following this service the remains were interred in Oakwood cemetery. Samuel Simpson Eslick was born near Lehigh, Oct. 17, 1852, and died on Oct. 7, 1924, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, 20 days. He was the last survivor of a family of eight children. On July 3, 1878, he was united in marriage to Jennie Currier Tucker and three children were born to them. Two of them, Stella E., wife of Fred Lynde of Stratford, and Ira Elbridge, have preceded this father in death. Aubrey O. and the wife and mother are left to revere his memory. In addition to them he leaves several nieces, nephews and other relatives, besides a host of friends, who sincerely mourn his passing. In the early years of his life he was converted and became a member of the United Brethren church. Later he engaged in the ministry and served in several pastorates, among them being, Webster City, Granger, Jamaica, Lake City, Saratoga and Dawson. At each of these places he built a new church and during the ten years he served as an active minister there were more than 500 accessions to his churches and he for a time and later moved to Stratford and performed as many marriage ceremonies. When his health failed he retired to his home in Webster county where for several years he conducted a grocery store. During that time he often filled engagements in the pulpits of churches when his health would permit and preached many funeral sermons. In December, 1913, he moved to Madrid where he located on a small acreage north of that place and where he passed away. The last five months of his life he suffered severely. He was stricken with paralysis several times but each time fought for returning health with heroic courage and bore his intense suffering with Christian patience and fortitude. "Simp," as he was familiarly known to those who knew and loved him best, always upheld the ideas and principles of honesty and christianity and he was ever loyal to the right and to his God in his person daily life.
