Theodore Meyer Served Rural Church for 48 Years — LeMars, Ia. - Special: Rev. Theodore Meyer, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran church in Preston township northwest of LeMars for 48 years before his retirement two years ago, died Wednesday in his home in Grant township nearby. Rev. Mr. Meyer was born April 4, 1869, in the village of Jabel in north central Germany where his father was a parish school teacher. He was one of nine children. He received his elementary schooling from his father and studied theology in Kropp, Germany. He came to the United States in 1890 and after a few months on the east coast came west. He preached his first sermon in St. John’s church May 31, 1891, and after the service, a meeting of the small congregation gave him a call as their pastor. He was ordained at Eldorado, Ia., June 9, 1891. During his 48 years in his first and only charge Rev. Mr. Meyer saw his congregation and church grow to many times its original size. He preached his farewell sermon April 9, 1939. His successor was Rev. Karl Fenske. Rev. Mr. Meyer married Miss Marie Gehrecke of Heilingengrabe, Germany, April 26, 1892, in St. John’s Lutheran church in Dubuque. Surviving besides his widow are seven children, Martha of Hampton, Ia.; Rev. Karl of Royal, Ill.; Rev. John of LaMoille, Ill.; Rev. Paul of Hampton, Henry of Burnsville, Ia., William, professor at Adams State Teachers college at Alamosa, Colo., and Mrs. Marie Kruse of Grant township, and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in his home and at 2 p.m. in the church. Rev. Mr. Fenske will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. H. Flentje of Burnsville, Rev. Gustav Meyer of Merrill, Rev. Fred Voelker of Craig and Rev. L. Bell of LeMars. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Sioux City Journal, November 1, 1941
