Victor C. Stechschulte, S.J., a native of Leipsic and director of the Xavier University seismological (earthquake) observatory, died in Cincinnati yesterday. The 61-year-old priest, who was nationally known for his work in deep focus earthquakes, suffered a heart attack in a residence hall on the Xavier campus. He was chairman of the university's mathematics and physics department and had perfected a number of super-sensitive instruments for measuring earthquakes. Surviving are two brothers, Clarence J. Stechschulte, 1895 W. Spring St., and Norbert J. Stechschulte, Ottawa, and three sisters, Sister Mary Gervase, a teacher at St. Gerard's School; Sister Mary Gertrude, an Ursuline nun in Toledo, and Miss Amelia Stechschulte, Lakewood. Father Stechschulte entered the Jesuit order in 1912. While studying for his doctor's degree at the University of California, he was in charge of seismographic stations there and at Stanford University. Father Stechschulte's first contact with the detection of earthquakes came during his undergraduate days at St. Louis University. Recently, in association with that institution's physics department, he worked on a project concerning the recording and interpreting of microbarometric waves for predicting weather. He made a tour of inspection in Lima and the surrounding area following the 1937 earthquake. He also spoke here on several occasions. Father Stechschulte belonged to a number of seismological and mathematical societies. From 1944 to 1947, he was president of the seismological section of the American Geophysical Union. Funeral services will be Monday with burial in Milford, Ohio. Victor C. Stechschulte, S.J., 61, who died Friday in Cincinnati of a heart attack. Burial will be in the Jesuit Cemetery in Milford. Fr. Stechschulte, a native of Leipsic, was director of the Xavier University seismological observatory and was nationally known for his work in deep focus earthquakes.
