William served in the US Army for forty-one years starting on May 8, 1945. Most of his forty-one years of service was served in the Reserves. He earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and also served as Chaplain in the Army Reserves.

William married Helen A. Softley on June 4, 1948 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They are the parents of Lana, Ronald and William "Pat".
