Description	:	William Spotswood White was born about 6 miles from Richmond at Beaver Dam estate. He was the first born son of Wm White (died Sep 1820) and Mildred Ellis (married 1799) from Hanover Co., VA. He is the grandson of Barrett White (died 18 Feb 1782) and Elizabeth. He was a Presbyterian clergyman, founded the Charlottesville Female Academy and was principal of local Ann Smith Academy for women. Rev. William S. White authored The African Preachers, An Authentic Narrative, Philadelphia, Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1849, about the African Preacher called "Uncle Jack" who White regarded "in many respects, the most remarkable man I ever knew." W S White was also on the slave schedule in 1850. On the 1860 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found Presbyterian Minister Wm S White, 60 born Hanover, VA; Jane J White, 56; Presbyterian Minister H Milton, 23; Harriet N Milton, 22; Hugh A Milton, 19 and Thos S Milton, 14, all VA born. W S White was also on the slave schedule in 1860. 23 Oct 1860, James T. McCrum, age 26, single, born in PA, residing in Lexington, a Druggist (321 South Main Street, Lexington, VA), the son of John and Margaret McCrum, married Miss Harriet N. White, age 22, born in Charlottesville, residing in Lexington, the daughter of Rev. Wm. S. and Jane J. White, by her father Wm. S. White, officiating in Rockbridge Co., VA. On the 1870 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found principle of Ann Smith Academy Wm S. White, 69; Jane Isabella White, 66; and 2 mulatto house servants Sallie, 40 and Allen Sevana, 45, all VA born. According to Col. Edwin L Dooley, Jr.'s annotated 1860 Lexington, VA census for VMI Archives: W S White came to Lexington from Charlottesville in 1848 to become minister of Lexington Presbyterian Church, 1849-67. Resigned as minister of Lexington Presbyterian Church in 1866 because of ill health (retained on salary but no duties); resigned again in 1867 (resignation accepted); became principal of Ann Smith Academy in 1868, where he and his wife taught until 1871. Then lived in the home of his daughter, Harriet White McCrum, until his death, 29 Nov. 1873, at the age of 73 [White, Rev. White]. He lived in the Presbyterian Manse while he was minister [Lyle & Simpson, Architecture, 96]. White Street named for him while he was still alive, “Lexington’s first new street after the Civil War. [1868]” [Hadsel, Streets, 151-153]. Check out Rev. William S. White, D.D. and His Times: An Autobiography, edited by his son Rev. H. M. White, D.D.,1891, Richmond. He is referred to as Stonewall Jackson's pastor. Four of his sons served in the CSA. Capt. Hugh A. White died in battle, 30 Aug 1862. He can trace his family back to 1680. Describes the circumstances, why he thought Virginia went to war. Beginning with Lincoln's 15 Apr 1861 proclamation, requiring 75,000 men to force the seceded states back to the union at bayonet point. White felt this was a declaration of war. "Virginia now felt that she no longer had the option of peace or war, nor any option between a war of invasion or a war for defense. It had been decided for her that she must and should fight, and that she should join in an invasion of her sisters of the South." Virginia then made the decision to fight and withdrew from the Union.
