For about one and a half hours they were all together and then the girls were given permission to go up and play in the oat bins. A short time later, the parents were startled by the cries of the youngest daughter and the appearence of a pair of little feet protruding from the spout of the bin which opened into the room where they were sitting. When Mr. Pearson rushed above, he found his second daughter had sunk into the oats more than a third of her height and realizing that his oldest child Rhea, was completely covered by the grain. He immediately dove in, risking his own life and began to try and reach the child, but he could not. Very soon the mother's cries brought help and the child was brought out after eight minutes. Even though Dr. Crawford was present when she was released from the bin, he could not revive her and she died. A little more than two hours had passed since she happily left home to visit her father. For the girls, playing in the oats bin was no new pastime. Nearly all of the neighborhood children had done it with out thought to it being dangerous. The bin at the time had 600 to 700 bushels in it and the spout, which was never left open, had been. The oats funneled out and sucked the girl down as they did. Her sister, Eva, tried to hold onto her hand and pull Rhea out, but she could not. It is known that little Eva took her sister's death very hard, thinking that she should have done more. No one blamed her. Rhea Pearson was born August 6, 1876, the oldest child of T.A. Pearson and Lucinda Pearson at Mt. Algor, Iowa. She diead September 14, 1886, aged 10 years, with the funeral being held the next day at 2 o'clock at the Congregational Church. Services were conducted by Reverand Spry and DeRiemer and she was buried in the Miles Cemetery. Rhea Pearson was said to have been a bright, intellegent, self-sacrificing, affectionate, ambitios and obedient girl. Alway ready to help anyone. She was the family favorite as well as a popular playmate.
