Description	:	Richard Arlen (Dick) Brown, 85, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away at his home on Monday September 14 after a brief, brave battle with cancer surrounded by his loving wife, his 3 children, and his sister-in-law. Dick was born at home in Vermillion on July 7, 1935 to Virgil and Myrtle (Severson) Brown. He attended schools in Vermillion, graduating in 1953 where he was active in football and basketball. Read More	Richard Arlen (Dick) Brown, 85, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away at his home on Monday September 14 after a brief, brave battle with cancer surrounded by his loving wife, his 3 children, and his sister-in-law. Dick was born at home in Vermillion on July 7, 1935 to Virgil and Myrtle (Severson) Brown. He attended schools in Vermillion, graduating in 1953 where he was active in football and basketball. His favorite sport was baseball in which he participated in many different areas throughout his life. While in High School, he broke his arm pitching a baseball which was announced by Dizzy Dean, former St. Louis Cardinal and announcer on National Radio. Dick served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1957 in the NAVAL SECURITY GROUP in Adak, Alaska. In college, he played for the USD Coyotes coached by Duane Cloafilter. He continued to support his love for the game by coaching Little League in Rapid City in the 60’s. Then it was on to umpiring in all different age groups and leagues in Vermillion and the region, The Vermillion Red Sox and the USD Coyotes. Dick graduated from USD School of Business in January of 1960, which served him well in various management positions. Dick had several careers. His last long term career was as manager of the Vermillion City Liquor store for 28 years. He married his college sweetheart, Jane Fansler, on June 24, 1960, in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Together they became Minnesota Twins fan at their beginning on April 11, 1961, which Jane will continue for both of them. Dick enjoyed USD sports, golf, horse races, pool, bowling and happy hour at the Eagles where he was a 40 years’ member. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and three children, Cathy Flicek, Jeff (Stephanie) Brown and Jackie (Wade) Mount, 5 grandchildren; DJ Berke, Nicholas and Stephen Flicek, Samantha Mount and Sidney (Jeff) Anglin and his 7 great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Gabriel, Benjamin, Ephraim, Hailee, Willow and Samuel all of whom he loved very much. He also is survived by his older sister, Berniece Berryman (age of 100), his in-laws, Helen Brown, Mary and Dale Bisson, Jim and Robin Fansler. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law and his 5 siblings. [Source: Kober Funeral Homes]
