Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Shenandoah Elk's Club. Richard Arthur "Dick" Johnson, one of four children of Frank Arthur and Gwendola Loretta (Westman) Johnson, was born on December 13, 1943 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away at his rural Essex home on April 7, 2017 at the age of 73 years, 3 months, and 24 days. Growing up Dick attended the Essex Community Schools, graduating from Essex High School with the Class of 1962. He lived his whole live near Essex, Iowa where he farmed with his dad and brothers, Terry and Harve. Dick served in the Iowa National Guard for six years from 1964 through 1970. On September 9, 1967 Dick and Mary Anne Martin were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Imogene, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Frank Michael, Lori Anne, and Brian Richard. Dick enjoyed farming, woodworking, and fishing. He loved spending time with his family, grandkids and friends. He was a wonderful son, husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and a good friend to all who knew him. Always quick to lend a hand, Dick will be remembered for his selfless kindness shown to anyone in need. Preceding Dick in death were his parents. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Mary Anne Johnson of Essex; children, Mike Johnson and wife Kathleen of Essex, Lori Johnson of Omaha, NE, and Brian Johnson and wife Mindy of Essex; four grandchildren, Brett, Bethany and Brianne Johnson, and Mariah Johnson and fiancé Donevan Roe (another grandson is on the way); siblings, Terry Johnson and wife Marcene of Shenandoah, Marg Lewis and husband Del of Fleming Island, FL, and Harve Johnson and wife Mary Ann of Essex; other relatives and many friends.
