A private family gathering will be 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, at Fry Funeral Home, followed by Masonic Funeral Honors at 5:00 pm. Richard Burdell Palmer was born April 13, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of William and Dorothy (May) Palmer. His family later moved to Tipton, where he worked at the Tipton Greenhouse. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1948. He attended Iowa State University, where he worked during the summers at Northwestern Railroad and also washed dishes at ISU Friley Hall. He graduated with an Animal Husbandry Degree in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1952 to 1955 and was stationed in Hamburg, Germany. Following his honorably discharge, he returned to the family farm south of Tipton, where he operated a cow-calf operation. He married Shirley Rae Howard on December 20, 1952, in Tipton. Shirley preceded him in death on November 5, 2007. He married Helen R. (Horr) Skewes in 2009. He later became employed with the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service and served on the Gulf shipping operations in Corpus Christi, Texas, until he returned to Iowa, where he served at the Cedar Rapids office, until he retired. He and Helen spent their winters on Mustang Island off the coast of Corpus Christi, Texas. Together they traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean, enjoying numerous cruises. He was a boy scout, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Helen; three daughters, Suzanne Morrow of Sioux Rapids, Patricia (Joel) Collinson of Dallas Center and Pamela (Rick) Loring of Iowa City; two sons, Michael(Tammy) Palmer of Peoria, IL, and Richard (Ronnie Burchett) Palmer of Leander, TX; nine grandchildren, Mike Morrow, Erik Morrow, Matt Morrow, Kristin (Palmer) Werdell, Scott Palmer, Brian Palmer, Joseph Collinson, Adreanne (Collinson) Perkins and Amber Phelps; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Martha (Bill) Hemminger, Melinda (John) Buckley and Roberta (Carson) Warrix; and two step-sons, Russell (Tedi) Skewes and Rod (Jill) Skewes. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one son-in-law, Michael Morrow and his mother and father-in-law, Russell and Nola Howard. Fry Funeral Home
