While serving Dick's ratings were AS, S2, S1, GM3 (gunner's mate) Vermillion May Killed on I-29 Ramp Richard D. Walz, 44, former Vermillion, S.D., city councilman and presently manager of the municipal liquor store there, was killed early Wednesday morning when his car struck a utility pole near the Combination Bridge. Mr. Walz was going south on Iowa Highway 7 and had turned right onto the ramp leading to I-29 north when he apparently lost control of his vehicle or was blinded by a flash of lightning, according to police reports. His car struck a utility pole on the right side of the ramp, police said. Patrolman Kenny Van Diepen and Harland Nelson investigated. Mr. Walz was alone in the car at the time of the accident at 2:54 a.m. Dr. Thomas Coriden, Woodbury County medical examiner, said Mr. Walz died from a brain contusion and hemorrhaging. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion. The Rev. Leonard Stanton will officiate and burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday at the Wagner-Iverson Funeral Home in Vermillion. Members of Clay Post No. 3061 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military graveside rites. Mr. Walz was born January 20, 1924, at Vermillion. He was a graduate of Vermillion High School and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Vivian Anderson of Webster, S.D., Mrs. Dorothy Prahl of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Glen Farmer of Columbus, Ga.; and one brother, Robert C. Walz of Brookings, S.D. Mrs. Anderson, his sister, is the wife of Circuit Judge Sigurd Anderson, former governor of South Dakota. He was graduated from Vermillion High School. He was employed in the city water plant, Thompson Lumber Co., was a member of the city council and was employed the last 3 ½ years as manager of the municipal liquor store. He earlier managed the VFW Club. It was reported Mr. Walz was driving his car toward Interstate Highway 29 at the combination bridge. He apparently missed the exit turn and his car crashed into a light pole. Mr. Walz was taken to St. Luke's Medical Center (East) by ambulance and was dead on arrival, the Woodbury County Coroner said. Death was from a cerebral hemhorrage and other injuries.
