Merchant Marines Since 1937 First Mate Richard E. Maly, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs Frank Maly, (deceased) died on Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock in New York City, New York, where he has been stationed, following a lingering illness of ten months. Serving with the U. S. Merchant Marines since 1937, he had advanced to the position of First Mate in the Marines and to the rank of Commander in the U. S. Maritime Service. He had visited many points and seen service in all battle zones. A Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated in the St. Rose church at Crofton on Tuesday morning, January 9, at 10:30 a. m. The Rev. Peter Grobbel officiated with Rv. Dominic Lavan OSB, Chaplin of St. Vincents Hospital in Sioux City as Deacon, and Rev Otto Buehler of Constance as sub-Deacon. Interment was made in the St. Rose Cemetery at Crofton. Richard E. Maly was born on July 2, 1916 at West Point, Nebraska and died on January 4, 1945, at the age of 28 years, 6 months and 2 days. He received his early education in the St. Rose school and attended Crofton High school, graduating with the class of 1933. He then entered the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and later left for the West Coast where he enlisted in the Marines. After serving in the battle zone area, was transferred back to the states and was stationed at Jackson heights, Long Island, New York. Surviving are four sisters: Sr. M. Bernadette OSB, Sioux City Ia (St. Vincent's Hospital), Mrs. J. F. Sudbeck and Mrs. Gilbert Steffen of Crofton and Marian Maly of Los Angeles, California, also three brothers: Fred V. Maly of Los Angeles, Calif and Hillard and Joe of Crofton. Pallbearers were, Irvan Sudbeck, Duane Sudbeck, Emil Plantenberg, Edward Kaiser and Arthur Schieffer all of Crofton and Pfc James Maly of Omaha, Nebraska. Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral services were Sr. M. Bernadette, OSB of Sioux City, Ia., Marian and Fred Maly of Los Angeles, California, Miss Loretta Betts, Long Island, New York, Mrs. C. H. Ellis, Sr. M. Monica OSB, Sr. M. Canillus OSB and Rev.
