ORANGEVILLE BANNER - 30 April 1914: ******************************** Mr. Richard Gray, one of the oldest residents of Amaranth, passed away at the home of his son, Frank Gray at Laurel, last Friday at the ripe age of 82. Mr. Gray came to this country with his parents when a mere boy. The family settled in Laurel, which was then, practically covered with bush. Mr. Gray was the first blacksmith in Laurel. The land on which the village now stands was then covered with bush and it was necessary to fell the timber and clear a space for the blacksmith shop. In religion the deceased was a Methodist and in politics a Reformer. There was a large attendance at the funeral which was held at Laurel Cemetery.
