Read More	Fatal Accident At Cement Plant Monday Morning Cave-in Causes Death of Richard Meier; Funeral from Baptist Church Friday Morning The first fatal accident at the cement plant here in a number of years, took the life of Richard Meier, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Meier of Superior, at about 8:30 Tuesday morning. Mr. Meier had gone into one of the "dirt" bins at the plant with a pole to start the shale into the opening at the bottom of the bin. The bin is about sixty feet long, thirty feet wide and twenty feet deep. The opening at the bottom, is about two by four feet. The shale which feeds from the bottom, had become caked over with a vacant place in the center. As he reached for his safety belt, he lost his balance, stepped out onto the shallow crust at the top and went into the hollow center, the shale caving in over him and causing suffocation. Harry Blackstone, plant employee, working with him at the time, quickly summoned help, and he was rescued through the opening at the bottom of the bin twenty minutes later. The rescue squad from the Superior Fire department, worked on him with their resuscitator for over an hour in a vain effort to save his life. Richard was born in Superior, December 5, 1917, and was a graduate of the Superior high school with the class of '37. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Whitney Meier, and daughter Judith, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Meier, one sister, Mrs. Gladys Simmons of Superior and two brothers, Hugh Meier of Superior and Pvt. Karol (sic) Meier of Camp Edwards, Mass. A brother, James, preceded him in death in 1939. Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church (sic), Friday, July 31 at 10 a.m., with E. Ray Dugger of Beatrice in charge. Interment will be at Evergreen.
