The deceased was one of the leading and prosperous farmers of Dubuque County. He was born in the County Monahan, Ireland, in 1814. In 1837 he was married to Essey Daly. In 1847 he emigrated to the United States, locating in Pennsylvania, where he resided for eight years. In 1855 he came to Iowa and engaged in farming. Although commencing as a renter, yet by his unremitting industry and good judgment, he succeeded in accumulating a large competency, and owned the largest body of improved land in the county. There were born to him six children: Thomas, Henry, George, Samuel, John and Mary Jane Ganfield. Of these there survive him, Thomas, Samuel and Mrs. Ganfield. Mr. Patterson was a man highly respected by his neighbors as was manifested by the large attendance at his funeral. James Hill who officiated at Richard's funeral was the same James Hill who enrolled Richard's sons, George and Henry Patterson, in Company I of the 21st Iowa Infantry on August 21, 1862. James served as 1st Lieutenant of the Company until poor health forced him to resign. He later came back as Chaplain and served until the regiment was mustered out on July 15, 1865, and he then resumed his ministry in Cascade. He was the regiment's only Medal of Honor winner.
