Description	:	Samuel Patterson, like many of the people in and around Cascade, is of Irish the Timothy, and is a son of Richard and Esther (Daily) Patterson. Read More	Samuel Patterson, like many of the people in and around Cascade, is of Irish the Timothy, and is a son of Richard and Esther (Daily) Patterson. They came to Pennsylvania in 1842 and the early fifties the parents, with their five sons, Thomas, Henry, George, Samuel and John, came west for the purpose of securing a better and more favorable opportunities for their children. The father came first to view the outlook, the balance of the family coming later. They resided for a time in Pennsylvania, where a girl, Mary, was added to the number of children. For eight years they resided in the Keystone state, where the father worked in a rolling mill. They then removed to Dubuque County, Iowa, where for fifteen years Mr. Patterson rented and farmed. Having accumulated $500, he purchased 200 acres of land, and being industrious, continued to add to this property until, at the time of his death, he owned 810 acres. In addition his children had also acquired extensive real estate holdings. These old settlers were deserving of much credit because of their thrift an excellent citizenship. Mr. Patterson, at the age of 75, died in 1875, followed by his widow in November, 1895, when 85 years old. The children all lived at home and were a credit to their parentage. George served in the Civil War as a member of company I, 21st Iowa volunteers, and was killed at the siege of Vicksburg; Thomas married Anna Hill, and died, leaving two sons, Robert and Thomas; Henry served his country in the same company and Regiment as his brother and died from the effects of the service after the close of the war, unmarried; John, the youngest, was associated with Samuel in many undertakings and died an untimely death at the age of 35, when youth and hope yet beckoned. Samuel Patterson, whose name heads this sketch, is a man of practical education and endowed with more than ordinary attainments. His life has been passed in agricultural pursuits and stock raising, and his ownership of several hundred finally improved acres of Iowa's best land attests to his success in life. He married Mary Jane Groves, daughter of John and Jane (Doily) Groves, in January, 1891. Mrs. Patterson was born January 29, 1862, and has born her husband six children, as follows: Mary A., born November 23, 1891; John R., January 13, 1893; George S., September 13, 1894; William H., August 19, 1895; died January 15, 1896; James H., September 24, 1897, died October 13, 1897; Lee Roy G. W., February 7, 1899, died January 14, 1901. Mr. Patterson is on general principles a Republican in politics, but he most frequently votes for the man instead of his party. He and his family are members of the Presbyterian Church. History of Dubuque County Iowa page 518 (c) 1911 Samuel Patterson, prominent citizen and one of the largest landowners in Dubuque County, died at his home - the old Chew mansion - at 11:45 Tuesday forenoon, September 23. Mr. Patterson had been in failing health for more than a year, and frequently during the past months his condition was such as to offer very little hope of his recovery. For a week he hovered between life and death with the final victory in the keeping of the Grim Reaper of lives, whose harvest is insatiate and whose mastery is inevitable. Mr. Patterson was a type of strong man who develop the resources of the country. He was one of the five sons of Richard and Esther (Daily) Patterson, and was born in Pennsylvania in 1844. With his parents and brothers Thomas, Henry, George, and John, and sister Mary (later Mrs. Samuel Ganfield now deceased) came to Iowa in the late 50s and settled in Whitewater Township, Dubuque County. Mr. Patterson, the father, rented a farm, and with the assistance of his sons accumulated sufficient means to purchase 200 acres, which was the nuclear this of the large Patterson estate. The sons remained at home, until death decimated the family circle. The Civil War claimed George and Henry, and John died an untimely death. Thomas and Samuel were left at home and by industry and thrift the holdings of the family were materially enlarged, until at the time of the death of the father, Richard Patterson, in 1875, the family estate numbered over 800 acres. Thomas having married, lived upon his farm adjoining. Samuel Patterson succeeded his father in possession of the estate, of which he was the dominant figure in creating. He grasped the idea of advanced farming and early adopted the stock-raising department in his farming methods. He was a man of practical education and had little patience with theories. His early manhood was given to hard labor and the results are reflected in the fine competency that he has left to his family. In January, 1891, Mr. Patterson was married to Mary J. Groves, daughter of John and Jane Groves, of Zion, Illinois, who survives him with three children, as follows: Mary Alma, John R., and George S. Three children died in infancy, William H., James H., and Leroy G. W. Mr. Patterson's venerable mother died in 1895 in her 85th year. Mr. Patterson retired from active farming 12 years ago and brought his family to Cascade, although always taking a deep interest in the conduct of his big farming estate. The funeral services took place this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the family residence and will be conducted by the Rev. D. S. deBest of the Presbyterian Church of what Wadena, Iowa, assisted by Rev. Kelly, and the burial took place in the family lot in the Protestant cemetery.
