Description	:	Richard "Smoke" Vosika, 87, passed away, Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Richard was born Nov. 8, 1926, on the family farm to Adolph and Mary (Hudek) Vosika. He began farming with his dad after graduating from Pocahontas High School in 1944, retiring in 1989 after a career spanning more than 45 years. Richard was born Nov. 8, 1926, on the family farm to Adolph and Mary (Hudek) Vosika. He began farming with his dad after graduating from Pocahontas High School in 1944, retiring in 1989 after a career spanning more than 45 years. He married Viola Margaret Besch at Saints Peter and Paul's Church in West Bend, Iowa, on Nov. 14, 1957. They had five children together. Viola passed away in 1981. On March 7, 1987, Richard married Kathy Osweiler in Pocahontas and lived there 14 years, eventually moving to Twin Lakes, Iowa, in 2001. Richard served the community in several capacities including being elected Pocahontas County Supervisor from 1976-1979, as well as serving as a Township Trustee for Sherman Township. He also was an active member of the Farmers Union and Knights of Columbus. He was extremely proud of his Czech heritage and Catholic faith, helping in the restoration of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Pocahontas, which was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. With his ancestral roots stemming from Lidice, Czechoslovakia, he created a memorial that was placed outside the church to commemorate the small town that was decimated during World War II. Richard had many interests during the course of his life and enjoyed activities such as polka dancing, gardening, playing cards, collecting and restoring antique cars and hog roasting with his homemade barbeque. He also was a master tinkerer and welder, creating masterpieces that only his family could truly appreciate. Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Manson, Iowa, children Michael (Linda) Vosika, of Pocahontas; Jeanne (Michael) Vande Voort of Ames, Iowa; Mark (Heidi) Vosika of Pocahontas; and Mary (Patrick Green) Vosika of Waukee, Iowa; stepsons Gary Osweiler of Ankeny, Iowa; and Brian (Layla) Osweiler of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and sister Jeanette Frost of Windsor Heights, Iowa. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Viola; son, Alan; brothers, Cyril and Lowell; sister, Lois Grant; and stepdaughter Michelle Osweiler. -contributed by Nadine Coles NOTE: In the 1930 Census, Richard was living in Sherman Twp. on the farm with his family, most likely the place of his birth.
