Born June 12, 1922 at Hightown, he was the son of the late Richard W. Hevener, Sr. and Della Hofsess Hevener. He married Dorothy Ellen Wimer of Blue Grass on December 8, 1943. A graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Hevener piloted 35 missions with the U.S. Air Force as first lieutenant during World War II. Born June 12, 1922 at Hightown, he was the son of the late Richard W. Hevener, Sr. and Della Hofsess Hevener. He married Dorothy Ellen Wimer of Blue Grass on December 8, 1943. A graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Hevener piloted 35 missions with the U.S. Air Force as first lieutenant during World War II. An aeronautical engineer with General Electric, he retired after 35 years of service, having been inducted in G.E's Propulsion Hall of Fame in 1987. Mr. Hevener, a Shriner and member of the Highland Masonic Lodge #110 for more than 50 years, served as secretary of the lodge for eight years. He also served on the board of directors of Highland County and was a member of Pisgah Presbyterian Church. A sister Charlotte Ann Hevener Hobbs, preceded Mr. Hevener in death. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hevener, of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Carolyn H. Pohowsky and Sharon Hevener, both of Hightown; three grandchildren, Christopher and Ian Pohowsky, and Samantha Greiff; and a brother Jacob H. Hevener of Hightown. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Obaugh Funeral Home handled the arrangements. The body was cremated. Information courtesy of the Daily News-Record, December 29, 2003.
