The number of yarns and tales, both fiction and fact, that have been spun around that stove are too many to count. Right many of them were told by the man who kept the fire going — Jacob Hevener. More than 200 friends and family members gathered Wednesday to say farewell to “Jake,” a man who exemplified Highland and its heritage, and represented a generation of farmers who helped shape this community. Jacob H. Hevener died Saturday at the age of 87, in the same stately house in which he was born. He was buried Wednesday in Monterey Cemetery, with full military and Masonic rites. Friends spoke of his leadership, inspiration, honor and faith. They wondered if Hightown would ever be the same. They remarked about the extraordinary love Jacob had for his children and grandchildren, and especially his wife and best friend, Carol, who survives. “He had character, knowledge. He was politically astute and he participated around the county, said neighbor Clay Hamilton this week. “He was a gentleman, and a good Christian man who was kind to everyone … I don’t recall him ever speaking ill of anyone. He was laudatory and positive.” “He was a gentleman farmer — the last of a dying breed,” added his cousin, Edmund Hevener. “He was totally involved, always interested in the community. He was old school.” When you first met Jacob Hevener, you instantly felt you’d known him all your life, friends agreed. My early visits to Highland County always involved a visit to the store, where I sat in a corner and listened to Jacob and Saul Simmons swap tales around the woodstove,” said former resident Pat Sheild Rand, upon hearing of Jacob’s death. “Even though I’ve been gone 10 years, he was still ‘Uncle Jake.’” In a county replete with long family trees, few could claim a richer history than Jacob Hevener. As postmaster, storekeeper, farmer, Army veteran, and local historian, he was a wealth of information and always eager to share it. Over the course of his lifetime, Jacob watched Highland evolve, and he played a significant role in that process. “You couldn’t find a better member of our community,” said Randy Richardson, a member of the Monterey Lions Club, in which Hevener served with perfect attendance. “We’ve lost one of our leading citizens.” Highland Recorder June 6, 1924 Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hevener of Hightown are being congratulated on the arrival, Tuesday morning, of a second son Jacob Hofsess by name. Highland Recorder January 12, 1945 Jacob H. Hevener, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hevener has received a double promotion in the Army, from private first class to sergeant. He is overseas having landed safely in France some weeks ago.
