The wedding was performed in the home of the bride by the Episcopalian minister, the Rev. Frank Stringfellow. After the death of his first wife, when he was 45, he married Ida Belle Via, daughter of John W. Via and Mary E. Crenshaw, on 26 Feb 1921 in Free Union, Albemarle, Virginia, USA. Robert Alexander Mahone was counted in the census in 1880 in Massies Mill, Nelson, Virginia, USA still in the household of his parents. He lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA in Sep 1893 while boarding in the Cabell House on the south side of Main Street between 9th and 10th Streets. He later lived in Jefferson St, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA in Oct 1893 in the home of Mr. J. C. Patterson and his family. He studied to be a telegrapher in 1894, in Senoia and Coweta Georgia, but he never worked in that field. He also learned to type which he may have found of more use. He also lived in Union, Paulding, Georgia, USA in early 1895. He was employed as a farm hand later in 1895 after returning from Georgia. He would chop corn for 25 cents a day and worked at the grist mill in Massies Mill. His wife Maria apparently had saved enough money to help Robert to open a store in Massies Mill. A photo taken in about 1896 may have been related to the opening of the store. He lived in Massies Mill, Nelson, Virginia, USA in 1900 and remained there the rest of his life. Illness: Bet. 15 Oct 1912–Jan 1914 in Massies Mill, Nelson, Virginia, USA His mother wrote, "I am glad to say Robert is up once more. He was confined to the bed 15th of last October and never able to sit up until last Tuesday one week ago then had to be lifted from the bed & put in a rocking chair. He can now walk about." He was buried on Friday Oct 24, 1941 in Jonesboro Cemetery, Roseland, Nelson, Virginia, by his first wife and in 1972, joined by his second.
