Description	:	When John Wyatt Walls Mahone was born on February 25, 1905, in Massies Mill, Virginia, his father, Robert, was 29 and his mother, Maria, was 37. He had eight brothers and three sisters. He died on January 20, 1937, at the age of 31, and was buried in Roseland, Virginia. My mother wrote of John, "He wanted to be an Indian. He quoted Hiawatha – he had black hair and he was a disreputable “old Indian” many times -drinking and carousing - and at other times loving and kind – especially to Mother & me. I loved him dearly... Read More	When John Wyatt Walls Mahone was born on February 25, 1905, in Massies Mill, Virginia, his father, Robert, was 29 and his mother, Maria, was 37. He had eight brothers and three sisters. He died on January 20, 1937, at the age of 31, and was buried in Roseland, Virginia. My mother wrote of John, "He wanted to be an Indian. He quoted Hiawatha – he had black hair and he was a disreputable “old Indian” many times -drinking and carousing - and at other times loving and kind – especially to Mother & me. I loved him dearly and he spent hours talking to me when I was a teenager. No one had much time for me as I was growing up & I appreciated his love & advice. He attended the University of Virginia in 1928 and received a teaching certificate. He then taught grade school at Faber in Nelson County. He also worked with his brother, Philip, on the Virginia Blue Ridge Railroad. He wrote stories and poems. One in particular about the Bayrd boy that was drowned on the Blue Ridge railroad by falling into a tank on the Blue Ridge RR. Unfortunately, he was dissipated and ruined his kidneys. He attended a Christmas party at the Carter’s at Bryant, got drunk and wandered outside in the rain to freeze, and caught pneumonia. As I recall he was at the University of Virginia hospital ill in January and died January 18, 1937, without pulling out of pneumonia. Gin says he died from kidney failure. My brother Lewis had pneumonia at home about the same time and recovered… Mother was sure John's death was due to his drinking. He was buried in Jonesboro on the worst day God ever sent to Nelson County - rain -freeze, etc. " Others recalled that John was sullen, likely suffered from depression, and often would stay in his room when family guests came over to visit, but he had a multitude of friends. On one occasion he was asked by a neighbor, Mr. Wood to drive his son to Shipman to catch the train out of town. It turned out that the neighbor's son had just killed someone and needed to escape before he was arrested. John obliged and certainly gained Mr. Wood's eternal thanks. Maria also wrote, "John dated Doris Brent after Dorothy Carter and gave her a stone ring for Christmas. (Doris was a senior at Fleetwood High School and I was there). He then asked Mother to lend him Grandma Maria‘s engagement ring (a lovely moonstone) to give to Doris as an engagement ring. John never had enough money or stayed sober long enough to get married. He died and Doris still has the ring. Mother wanted it back & the last we heard, one of Doris’ sisters had the ring." It was right after that that he had his final illness. While he was in the hospital his father wrote this letter to John's only sister: "Jan 7, 1937, My dear, I have hope yet thank God. Nelson, Phil and I went to see John last night and while he is very weak he is perfectly normal as far as his mind is concerned. We went from the hospital to the Doctor and he advised us not to move John yet.- that he has not given up hope of his recovery. He says John is critically ill, but he has had patients just as ill who recovered. I fear I am writing you very incoherently but I have been interrupted so many times in trying to write you that you will have to excuse me. John's friends drop in so often to inquire about him that I am almost constantly worked up. Lucille asked why you could not go down and stay a few days but I told her you could not leave little Lewis yet. When we got to Nelson's last night, the family was at supper and I was happy to see little Margaret sitting at the table with them. She is getting on fine and I hope can come home in a week or two. Mahone" Robert saved several condolence letters, this one was notable: Amherst VA Jan 21st 1937 Dear Cousin Robert and help all the bereaved ones: I just want you to know that I am mingling my tears with yours and you have my heartfelt deepest sympathy. Any consolation greater than this must come from a higher power. I know that you have been mother and father to him for many years and should have no regrets along that line. After all medical skill was exhausted, we must submit to God's will and try and smile through tears saying Thy will be done. With love and best wishes your true friend. Cousin Minnie I assume that this was Mildred Nelson Whitehead who would have been John's first cousin.
