Description	:	When Evelyn Harrison Mahone was born on June 23, 1896, in Massies Mill, Virginia, her father, Robert, was 20, and her mother, Maria, was 28. She married Henry Lewis Gantt on December 18, 1915, in the Baptist Rectory where she had been living, home of the Rev. Paulus Massie, Piney River, Virginia. They had seven children in 16 years. She died from cancer on July 22, 1991, in the home of her daughter, Maria Keller, Henrico, Virginia, at the age of 95, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery by her husband. She married Henry Lewis Gantt on December 18, 1915, in the Baptist Rectory where she had been living, home of the Rev. Paulus Massie, Piney River, Virginia. They had seven children in 16 years. She died from cancer on July 22, 1991, in the home of her daughter, Maria Keller, Henrico, Virginia, at the age of 95, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery by her husband. Evelyn was in the first graduating class of the new Fleetwood High School at Roseland in 1913. Her two older children, Maria and Lewis Gantt, were the last graduates of this school in May 1934. A new grade and high school was then built at Massies Mill, VA from which school her other children graduated. Education: Bet. Sep 1913 - 1914, Attended Fredericksburg Normal School from 1913 (Now Mary Washington College) Namesake: Named for her mother's sister who had died five month's before she was born, only 26 days after she had been married. Occupation: 1915, Taught grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 in a two-room school for one year but left when she married. Religion: Episcopalian, Grace Church, Massie's Mill, VA July 22, 1991 Death of Evelyn Mahone Gantt Dear family and loved ones: Today is the day Mother went to be with the Lord. At one this morning she just slipped away in her sleep. I was with her until after 12 and the nurse called me at one and said she was gone. The Hospice Nurse came immediately and took care of all the details for us and we were able to return to bed at 3:15 even if we did not sleep. She asked for permission to die since she was so tired, and we gave her permission. She wanted to know if everything was done and we assured her everything was complete. She really had true grit. I know that I will be the one that misses her the most, but we are so glad our prayers are answered, and she will not have to suffer any more. We have talked to the most of you to let you know that the funeral will be at Roseland, at Byrum-Parr, on Wednesday, July 24 at 2 p.m. The minister requested it be at Grace Church, but the newspaper releases had gone out this morning as well as 100 telephone calls . We will leave here Tuesday by 10 for Roseland to attend to the final arrangements. Catherine Earle and Don went to Nelson County today. We will be staying with them. We do appreciate Kate's invitation to stay with her and the telephone calls. We will have open house at 8221 on Thursday. I gave Ellen the key this morning to get food lined up. Nell was here to help me this morning. Bob came for lunch and to help where he could. Rachel spent the morning with us. Beth is on her way home from Massachusetts, arriving about 4 p. m. We have calls in as well as out. I am still trying to reach Sarah Holland and Floyd and Helen Hudgins in Florida, and Philip Mahone in Oregon. Todd is trying to reach his parents to share with them the news . Ida came to visit Mother just before she left. Juliet Redd Wynne came; for a Sunday visit and brought church flowers. Harry and Shirley Keller came for a visit on Friday. Arthur Keller and Andy's family came for a visit on Sunday. Carr and Jeannie Reynolds had been over the weekend before. No one could understand how Mother could keep on living as weak as she had become. Carolyn Hensley was with her the three weekend nights. On Saturday, Gloria Wiley, a trained nurse, came to be with her from 8:30 to 1:30. At 1:30 Mrs. Longest, a trained nurse from Richmond Memorial, who is a neighbor and Mother's hospice volunteer, came. This allowed us to go to Nelson County to see Lewis and Jule's family. Jule was about the same and Lewis was suffering with an infection following his recent surgery. We are trying to keep all of the pressure off of Lewis and Helen and pray that he will continue to improve. We stopped by to see Kate, but she must have been out on a visit. We promised to see her on our next visit. It was a rushed trip home but well worth the time it took. We got peaches from Saunders' Orchard. I can't recall much about last week. This is the week of Jimmy Gantt and Lisa's wedding, on Saturday, the 27th at 6 p.m. and we all look forward to being there. I am sure glad the funeral is in the middle of the week. We were reminded by Andy that this past weekend would be Daddy's 100th birthday if he were still living . He died July 16, 1959 at home as Mother did. The only difference is Mother was at home in Richmond not Roseland. Andy called to say children were invited to the wedding so they will be there with us. Bob and Kathy are tied up with her company picnic and Rachel's 9th birthday. We will miss them. Leroy has been in and out this morning and is now back from visit to church. Had a call from Pat at the church office I have to say that our new minister may come out to visit us. I have not gotten to meet him. This is the end of the space so best wishes to all of you.
