Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 29, at Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Pastor Gary Westgard officiating. Vocalist was Dennis Wollman with Dorothy Brugman as accompanist. Burial was in the Hazel United Methodist Cemetery. Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 37 of Bryant. Honorary pallbearers were his nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews who were a big part of his life. Mr. Adams was born April 6, 1922, to William W. and Kathryn H. (Weelborg) Adams on the family farm southeast of Hazel, Brantford Township. He was the fifth child of a family of six boys and two girls. He attended rural school and later Hazel High School, graduating in 1940 as Valedictorian of his class. After graduation, he along with his brother Don, attended radio school in Aberdeen and radar school in Des Moines, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Army Signal corps in 1942 and served until the end of World War II. His tour was in the Pacific Theater including New Guinea, New Zealand, and the Philippines and was part of the Pacific Fleet on their way to invade Japan when the atom bomb was dropped. Three other brothers: Don, Jesse and Archie served at the same time. After the war he returned to Hazel and was the U.S. Mail Rural carrier for 34 years. He drove one million miles without an accident and received a safe driving award each of the years. He was a member of the Hazel United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for 16 years. He served on the cemetery board for many, many years. He was a volunteer fireman at Hazel and an American Legion member of Vienna Post 277 until they shut down and he then joined Bryant Post 37. He coached the Hazel Womenʼs Softball Team for 27 years from 1948 to 1977. He had many outstanding players, winning many league championships and three state championships. Bob was inducted into the SD ASA Hall of Fame in 2003. He had many hobbies including bee keeping, hunting, trapping, bowling and raising Brittany hunting dogs. After retiring from the mail route, he made 14 hunting trips to Africa and 10 more to the Yukon and British Columbia. He also hunted in many states in the U.S. He is one of only a few who has the Grand Slam of Sheep and the Africa Big 5. They are all part of a fabulous collection displayed at his museum in Hazel. Survivors include three brothers, Jesse (Virginia) Adams of Bluffton, Ind., Wayne Adams of Watertown and James (Marie) Adams of Watertown; sisters-in-law, Helen Adams of Hazel and Georgia Adam of Medford, Ore.; and 28 nieces and nephews.
