He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Dove, and Mrs. Inez Pringle, both of Shreveport, and Mrs. Della Thompson of Anacoco; one son, Robert D. Self Jr. of Bryan, Texas; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. -------------------- Robert Dewitt Self, was known by all as "Uncle Dewitt" Robert Dewitt Self was born in Toro Community, Sabine Parish, Louisiana, on 6 Dec 1880. He married Annie Lourania Ferguson on 14 Apr 1908. Robert died on 23 Feb 1985 in Leesville, Vernon Parish, Louisiana, at age 104. Robert Dewitt Self died of acute heart failure at 10:45 pm on Feb. 23, 1985. His body was interred in Anacoco, Vernon Parish, Louisiana, in Beech Grove Cemetery. From an interview with Robert Dewitt Self by Inez Self Pringle, 1976, she stated: Robert Dewitt Self was born December 6, 1880, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. He became a member of Toro Baptist Church in 1896. This church, still active today, is located near Self Cemetery, and what is now Hodges Gardens. His grandparents's home was located in a corner of the Gardens and even now any relative wishing to visit the cemetery is escorted through the garden to the cemetery. His grandparents, David Washington Self and Letitia Sibley, were charter members of Toro Baptist Church, which was organized September 21, 1848, with a total membership of 70 (27 men, 26 women, and 17 slaves), Reverend William L. Sibley as Pastor. After school was completed (age 16-17), he started work near Pleasant Mill, Louisiana, in timber and logging. Later he enlisted in the Navy. The War of 1898 (Spanish American War) was in progress while he was in Service. He states he didn't know War was going on as they were out at sea and War was over before they came back to port. While in Service he was diagnosed as having Tuberculosis, but several weeks of good food and continued rest as they made the trip from New Orleans to New York City effected a cure. He and two others (Seamen) were to be taken to Ellis Island to the Tuberculosis Sanatorium for treatment. Later he worked in a Circus, making one day stands; included in these tours were operations around Bryan, Texas, and on into Houston, Texas. Recently on a trip to Bryan, at age 98, he recalled vividly and remembered and recognized different areas around Kurtin and Bryan where they played. He recalls he was in charge of erecting the tents for the acts. According to a newspaper article reporting on Uncle Dee's 96th birthday, he "contributes his long life to having a good wife, getting plenty of exercise and working hard. When the weather permits, Uncle Dewitt can still be found doing chin-ups in the pine trees around the Nursing Home. He states that he does it to keep his muscles working right.
