Read More	Robert Downey Another pioneer of Burlingame township has passed away, another defender of freedom's flag has joined the hosts encamped on the other shore. Robert Downie died last Saturday at his home in the northern part of this township. For over a year he had suffered intense pain from a continued attack of rheumatism which kept him confined to his bed. So great was his suffering that at last it wore out his once rugged constitution and brought an ent to his honorable and upright life. The deceased was well known here, and his career was such as to give him what he deserved, the confidence and respect of all. Robert Downie was born in County Down, Ireland, March 6, 1832, and came to this country when but eight years old. His boyhood days after coming here were spent in Butler county, Pennsylvania. In 1857 he came to Kansas, and after a short stay in this state, went to Colorado, where he worked in a gold mine until the breaking out of the Civil War, when he enlisted in Company C, First Regiment,Colorado Volunteer cavalry. He served his country with that regiment for four years and three months. At the end of the war he came to Jefferson county, Kansas, where he was married to Miss Sarah Henley. Eleven children were born to them, ten of whom with the devoted wife survive the deceased. Of the children, five are married, William, Thomas, Relle, Hattie and Annie, and five,Frank, Robert, Edward, John and Susie, are at home. All of the children were present at the funeral.His brother, John Downie of Dennison, Kansas, was the only one of his father's family able to attend. In 1883 Mr. Downie moved with his family to Osage county, and he has resided here ever since. Mr. Downie has been a consistent member of the Methodist church for twenty-five years. He was also a member of the G. A. R. Post of this place, having been initiated just seven years previous to the day of his funeral. The funeral was held at the Prairie Center church, Monday, Rev. Boicourt of Auburn preaching the sermon. The remains of an exemplary citizen, good neighbor, kind father and devoted husband were laid at rest there.
