Description	:	William Downie,77,retired city fireman, died Sunday morning at his home, 1250 Lincoln, after a long illness. Born April 13,1868 near Winchester,Kansas he came to Topeka in 1898. He became a member of the Topeka Fire Department in 1902,and was in the original company when No.5 Station was opened a few years later. He remained at that station and was captain when he was retired on a pension in 1929. Retirement Hastened An accident while returning from a fire shortened his career. Read More	William Downie,77,retired city fireman, died Sunday morning at his home, 1250 Lincoln, after a long illness. Born April 13,1868 near Winchester,Kansas he came to Topeka in 1898. He became a member of the Topeka Fire Department in 1902,and was in the original company when No.5 Station was opened a few years later. He remained at that station and was captain when he was retired on a pension in 1929. Retirement Hastened An accident while returning from a fire shortened his career. After recovering from the injury, he was in charge of the state employment office for two years and later was associated with the state department of registration and taxation. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and Golden Rule Lodge No 90, AF&AM. Funeral Tuesday He is survived by his widow, Mrs.Carrie A. Downie of the home;two sons,Clarence E. Downie, Topeka and Robert H. Downie, Albuquerque, New Mexico; two daughters, Miss Marjorie Downie, Amarillo Texas and Mrs.G.Glenn Cooper, Topeka; three brothers,E.B.Downie, Little Rock Arkansas;R.M.Downie, Garden City and John V. Downie, Oakland, California;and four sisters, Mrs. Annie Engle, Glendale, California; Mrs. Charles E. Scott, Kansas City,Kansas; Mrs. Isabel Slatten and Miss Sue Downie both of Topeka. The funeral will be at 2pm Wednesday at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary with Interment in Praire Home.
