Dayton Review May 25, 1939 OBITUARY Robert Emil Manguson was born October 11, 1856 in Gottenberg, Sweden, and died May 14, 1939, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 3 days, after a prolonged illness resulting from a heart attack. He came to this country with his parents in the year 1857, the voyage here having been made in a sail boat which was shipwrecked, but miraculously for those early days, another boat overtook them in time to save the passengers so that they landed safely in New York. There the family lived for 5 years and then moved to Swedona, Ill. Later they moved to a farm near Osco, Ill. Mr. Manguson's parents, Eric and Sara Manguson were two of the oldest pioneer residents of the Osco and Andover community. Therefore Robert's childhood recollections go back to Civil War days when he stood on the picket fence and watched his uncle, Samuelson, ride off to war. He also had many memories of the activities which centered around the old Lutheran church at Andover. He was confined [confirmed] in the Orin Lutheran Church in 1873. On July 2, 1889, he was united in marriage to Minnie Johnson of Orin, Ill. To this union five children were born, one daughter, Nora, having died in infancy. Their home was on the farm near Osco, Ill., where they had lived 24 years. In 1913 they moved near Dayton, Iowa, where he has lived for 26 years. Those who mourn his passing from this life are: his wife, two sons, Clyde and Ralph; two daughters, Mrs. Leslie Sonquist and Mrs. Robert Carlson and 10 grandchildren. A brother, Frank Manguson of Osco, Ill., and two sisters, Ms. Ida Elm of Cambridge, Ill., and Mrs. John Westerland of Red Oak, Iowa. Also many other relatives and friends survive. Mr. Manguson took an active interest in his community and enjoyed a happy fellowship with his friends and neighbors. Our father and husband leaves with us a memory of sincere kindness and joyous mirthfullness which will always be cherished. His great friendship for his Savior was given expression by his singing of hymns which he loved to do from his youth.
