Was With Patton's Third Army and Met His Death in France, Monday, September 25th. Pfc. Ray was about 28 years of age and made his home in Big Sandy previous to entering the service. He was killed in action serving with the 3rd army in France, according to notification of the war department received by his wife, Margaret Ray, of Choteau. Robert Ray was born Dec. 8, 1915, near Loma. He attended the high school in Big Sandy, graduating in 1936. He played three years of basketball and four years of football, being co-captain in his junior year and captain in his senior year of both the basketball and football teams. He was president of the Big Sandy FFA chapter and also played baseball with the team there. Previous to entering the service he had farmed near Big Sandy and worked in the J. E. Mayhood garage. He was inducted into the army March 10, 1942, at Fort Lewis, Wash., and from there he was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for his basic training. After completing training he was sent to Pine Camp, New York, where he was in the tank corps of the armored division. In Sept. 1942, he was sent to Fort Knox again for specialized training in tank mechanics. Following this training he spent six months of desert maneuvers in California. From California he was sent to Camp Bowie, Texas, and was there until he went overseas in Dec. 1943. In July 1944, he landed in France. At the time of his death he was a radio man on a tank with the 3rd army under General Patton. On Aug. 11, 1942, he was married to Margaret Hodgskiss of Choteau, Montana, in Niagara Falls, New York. She was a former economics instructor in the Big Sandy school. A son, Robert Gary, was born April 6, 1944. In addition to his widow and son, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ray, of near Loma; five brothers, Wallace and Norman, in the army; and Edward, Leonard and Lindy, of Big Sandy; four step-brothers, Murrel, in the army, Charles in the Marine corps, Kenneth and Millard, of Houston, Texas, and one step-sister, Helen Rogers in Washington. The relatives have heartfelt sympathy of all the people of the county in the loss of their loved one, who has given his life in defense of his country.
