The boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Tince) Upchurch, was pronounced dead at the Cherokee County Memorial Hospital shortly after his limp body was found in the abandoned electric -ice box at 6:30 p. m., Wednesday. He had been sought since shortlv after noon. The victims younger brother, Billy, 5, apparently forgot he had locked Robert in the box while they played earlier in the day. “Robert got in and told me to shut the door,” Billy, who is small for his age, said after the tragedy. The refrigerator was located a few feet from the front door of the Upchurch home, leaning against the side of the building. A slight touch to the door could have closed it. The racks had been taken out, apparently by the children, and placed atop the box. L. T. Ross, one of scores of neighbors who helped the parents search the area around the bouse, found the boy’s body slumped inside the refrigerator. His father was nearby. An examining physician. said the child had been dead about to 46 minutes. One neighbor said he had passed by the refrigerator a half-dozen times during the search but it did not occur to him to look Inside. The distraught father removed the refrigerator's door latch soon after the tragedy. Standing nearby when a photographer took a picture of the Ice box, the father said almost inaudibly in the darkness: I hope everybody sees it so that the same thing doesn’t happen to someone else.” Coroner Jack E. Millwood said no inquest will be held. Robert, who had just started at West End School, stayed home Wednesday to play in the snow. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a. m. Friday at the Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Bishop officiating. Burial was in the Oakland cemetery with the Shuford - Hatcher Company morticians, in charge. Pallbearers were four playmates of the. victim Billy Ross, Earl and Harold Blackwell and Arthur Easler. Besides his parents, Robert is Survived by three sisters, Sybil, Brenda Lee, and Cathy Upchurch; three brothers, Bill, Arthur, Jr., and David Wayne Upchurch: a half-sister, Patricia Moore; four half-brothers, A. C., Roger, Russell and Charles Moore; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sutton, of Blacksburg, and. Mrs. Beadie Upchurch, of Blacksburg.
