Hilton Pioneer Resident of Southwest Iowa The death of Robert I. Hilton which took place Sunday, Sept. 8, in a hospital in Los Angeles, Cal., took from southwest Iowa one of its long time citizens. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hilton, well known and highly respected residents of Randolph. “Bob” was born on a farm near White Cloud in Mills county on Oct. 19, 1870, almost 76 years ago. At the time of his birth White Cloud was a prominent trading center in that part of the state and had figured prominently as a stopping point for western travelers and for those who conducted the “underground” railroad during the days preceding the Civil War when slaves were conveyed from this part of the state to Canada for their freedom. Mr. Hilton was born a year after the Burlington railroad came through western Iowa on its way to the Missouri river. He was born the year the same railroad opened its branch from Red Oak to Hamburg, giving rise to the villages of Shenandoah, Farragut, Riverton. He was familiar with and shared the pioneer life of his time. Dec. 8, 1894, he and Emma Maud Pippitt were united in marriage. She was the daughter of a pioneer family of Fremont county. Six children were born to them, three boys and three girls; Raymond died Jan. 21, 1923. The other children are Clyde and Millard of Sacramento, Cal., Mrs. B.L. Bushnell of Los Angeles, Mrs. LeRoy Bingham and Mrs. Jack Bingham of Malvern. Nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren share the sorrow of the immediate family. For 35 years Mr. and Mrs. Hilton shared in the community life of their farm neighborhood south of Randolph. Mr. Hilton was one of a family of nine children. His brother, Clark, died April 30, 1937, his brother Harry passed away June 8, 1945 and his brother Frank died Feb. 1, 1946. Two brothers and three sisters are living. Walter of Glenwood and Ray of Malvern, Mrs. Anna McDill, Lincoln, Neb., Miss Edith Hilton of Chadron, Neb., and Mrs. Chas. E. Trively of Randolph. Robert and his companion were members of the Methodist church of Randolph. They reared their children in the principles of that great faith. His wife, who died some years ago, also was a member of a large family circle. The family gatherings of these two groups were outstanding social events of the year. Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 12, 1946, at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist church at Randolph. Burial was in the Randolph cemetery.
