Description	:	Robert J. Rains Jr., 88 of Rural Birmingham died at 1:11 pm Thursday September 11, 2014 at Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua. He was born October 17, 1925 near Lockridge to Robert J. and Helen Forney Rains and married Beulah M. Parrott September 16, 1944 in Butler, NC prior to leaving for Europe with the 282nd Engineers Battalion, U.S. Army. Beulah died May 3, 2014. Read More	Robert J. Rains Jr., 88 of Rural Birmingham died at 1:11 pm Thursday September 11, 2014 at Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua. He was born October 17, 1925 near Lockridge to Robert J. and Helen Forney Rains and married Beulah M. Parrott September 16, 1944 in Butler, NC prior to leaving for Europe with the 282nd Engineers Battalion, U.S. Army. Beulah died May 3, 2014. During his Army service he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and took part in building roads and bridges including the bridge over the Rhine River with American Troops under Gen. George Patton travelled into the heart of Germany. Bob graduated from Fairfield High School and was a life-long farmer, living on the same farm east of Birmingham since 1950. He had also been employed at Noller Bros. Implement Co. and Rockwell International in Fairfield and Sinclair Petrochemicals, Batavia and was a self-employed mechanic and a member of Haney-Brannan Post No. 181, American Legion, Birmingham. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, working on antique tractors and playing with his grandchildren. Surviving are two sons, Allan L. Rains(Maria)of Bonaparte and Roy D. Rains(Sherry)of Birmingham, a daughter, Carolyn K. Taylor(Delbert)of Bloomfield, nine grandchildren, Tracey Victory of Birmingham, Penny Brombaugh of Keosauqua, Lesa Prevo of Bloomfield, Amanda Lyons of Downing, MO. Angie Strictler of Stockport, Sheila Rains of Farmington, Robbie Rains of Salem, Kerry Taylor of Ankeny and Kris Taylor of Fairfield, 16 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Karen Fordyce(Gordon)of Davenport. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Darrell Robert Rains, two brothers, Clarence and Leonard Rains and a sister, Dorothy Barrow. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Tuesday September 16, 2014 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, Pastor Phil Campbell officiating. Visitation will open at 2 pm Monday at the funeral home with family present from 5-7 pm. Burial with military honors by Hanson-Brannan Post and Iowa National Guard Honors Team will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds. Memorials to Birmingham Fire Department, Birmingham Homecoming or Zion Lutheran Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 5, Birmingham, IA 52535.
