John; Ensign Thomas; Thomas, Sr. Robert James Stoughton was born on 21 Sept 1850, in Center Twp. Butler County, Pa. and later moved to Hocking County, Ohio, with his parents, sometime in the 1850’s. In 1880, he was living, with his brother, Josiah, in Goodhope Twp., Hocking County, Ohio and he was a Wagon Maker. He died in Fairfield County, Ohio on 2 August 1921. His death certificate number is 44238, Vol. 3648. There was some conjecture that Robert married and had a child with one Eliza A. Oldfield. The following data, in Quotes, is an excerpt of facts sent to me by Mrs. Kay Stoughton Butler, in May 2003: “Eliza A. Oldfield died on 7 June 1875, not 1885, as reported before and presumably as a result of childbirth, as the “Infant Stoughton” was born on that date. I can find no record that Robert James Stoughton and Eliza Oldfield were ever married, at least, in Hocking County. Another indication that they were never married was the fact that Eliza’s death record was for Oldfield, not Stoughton, also, the death record for the infant, who died only 12 days after birth, (19 June 1875) says the mother’s name was Eliza Oldfield.” According to Kay, Eliza would have been only 15 when she became pregnant and 16, at the birth of the “Infant Stoughton,” and Robert may not have received Eliza’s parent’s permission to marry her, due to the 10/11-year age difference. Indeed, according to Kay, the family of his future wife Margaret, listed below, also opposed his marriage to their daughter.” He married Margaret Walker, before 1876 and she was born, in Ohio, on 3 December 1861 and died in Bern Twp, Fairfield County, Ohio, on 23 September 1908. They are both buried in the Ream Cemetery, in Sugar Grove, Fairfield County, OH.
