Robert Klay Passed Away Monday Following a Short Illness The fast diminishing roll of Montana pioneers was made thinner Monday morning when death called Robert Klay, resident of the Shonkin section for 49 years, death occuring at St. Clare hospital following a short illness from kidney trouble. For 47 years Mr. Klay had lived on one ranch in the Shonkin mountains, where he raised a family of six sons, five of whom reside in that immediate section. Mr. Klay was well known to a large number of older residents of the country and his part in settling and making of this county was no small one. He went through the usual trials and tribulations of the early settlers of Montana, always fighting and working to carve out a home for himself and family in the state of his adoption. He was held in highest esteem by hundreds of friends throughout the state and his passing will be learned with genuine regret by all who knew him. Robert Klay was born in Switzerland on Nov. 13, 1848, and passed away at St. Clare hospital at 10:55, Monday morning, Sept. 7th, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 24 days. He came to Montana by boat in 1882 and landed at Fort Benton. On the same boat on the trip to Fort Benton was Fred Glinke of this city. Mr. Klay worked for two years for H. O. Lying, and then homesteaded on Lacey creek on the Shonkin, which place has been his home ever since. He was married in 1887 to Lena Beckman, who died in 1918. To this union were born seven children, six of whom survive him. The only daughter passed away in early childhood. Of the six sons surviving, five of them live close to the old homestead: Alfred, Dave, August, Oscar and Karl. One son, Lawrence, resides in Great Falls. Funeral services were held from the Louther undertaking parlors on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. Dan W. Brown, pastor of the Christian church of this city. Interment was made in the family plot in Riverside cemetery. The sons have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their loss of a loving and kind father, while the community loses a real pioneer and friend. ......... The following provided by Find A Grave contributor Gerald Wright: Robert's wife was Lena Beckman, born May 1867 in St. Louis, Missouri, they were married 18 April 1887 in Chouteau Co., Montana, in 1900 she was committed to the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs, Montana, where she died 7 Mar 1918. She was the mother of all of Robert's children.
