Cumming Funeral services were held Monday from the Methodist church for Robert Lee Cumming, who was the victim of a drowning accident at Wagner's Lake at Columbus Friday. He was swimming with a companion at the time of the tragedy. He called out for help, apparently stricken, and the companion immediately summoned aid. When the crash unit of the fire department arrived on the scene, the boy was nowhere in sight. Drag lines and grappling hooks were immediately put into use in an effort to locate the body and it was pulled from the water approximately 20 minutes after going under. The rescue squad of the fire department worked over the boy for an hour and a half in an effort to revive him, using a respirator and the Monohan lung. A physician could find no heart beat after this period. Robert Lee Cumming was born November 14, 1938, in St. Edward, the son of Earl and Pearl Day Cumming. He was to have been a junior in Columbus high school the coming term, and during the summer was employed by Jim Cumming at the Y Knot Drive Inn at Columbus. He is survived by his father; three brothers, Elwyn of St. Edward, Loren in the Air Force in Massachusetts, and Richard, in the Air Force in Tokyo; one sister, Beverly, at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Cumming of St. Edward; and a host of relatives and friends. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. James E. Bassett of Cozad. A sister preceded him in death in 1934. Rev. Bert Bessire officiated at the service monday at 2:30 p.m. Mrs. Hazel Condreay and Mrs. Merrell Willard sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd". Mrs. Fay Smith accompanied at the piano. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Carter, Sid Meridith, Jim Mahoney, Larry Hirsch, Larry Reynoldson and Roger Thompson. Relatives and friends coming from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Moody of Cedar Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Behlen and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Galley, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Cumming, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cumming and Gus Sawyer, all of Columbus; Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Cumming of Hastings; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibson and daughter and Mrs. Joe Zak of Omaha, and Bessie Klingler of O'Neill.
