He died January 22, 2005, at the St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa at the age of eighty-six years. Read More	Robert Carlson July 15, 1918 - January 22, 2005 Robert LeRoy Carlson was born July 15, 1918, the son of Albin and Alice Wells Carlson. He died January 22, 2005, at the St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa at the age of eighty-six years. Robert was born in Danbury, Iowa, raised on a farm as young boy, moving with his parents near Mapleton and ending on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. Robert's education was completed the end of eighth grade, at the Willow #2 Grammar School, left school in 1933. He continued to help his father on the farm, planted oats, corn, wheat and barley. February 21, 1941, Robert entered active duty with the Army of Fort Snelling, Minnesota, the organization of 701st Military Police Batallion. He was four months as Private, Military Police Basic training where he gained marksman with M-1 Rifle. Military education included Cooks and Bakers School, Fort Riley, Kansas, for twelve weeks. He was later assigned as Mess Sergeant to 121st General Hospital, in the European Theater. He supervised and controlled activities of kitchen personnel. He supervised preparation of food following a master menu. He made requisitions and purchased supplies. He prepared soups, meats, vegetables, gravies and baked pies, rolls, donuts, and biscuits. He was thoroughly familiar with kitchen management. Decorations and citations included: American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Date of separation from duty was January 12, 1946, at Fort Mac Arthur, California with Honorable Discharge. On September 9, 1946 Robert married Margaret Marcella Wright in Harlan, Iowa. The couple farmed near Dow City and Charter Oak prior to making their home in Denison in 1970. Robert and Margaret celebrated their 50th Anniversary at Charter Oak with the Whiskey River Band, in 1996. They remained members of the United Methodist Church, at Charter Oak, Iowa. Robert loved music, played drum in a band, to dance, play cards and fish. Enjoying life to the fullest, he never missed baseball or basketball series on television. He was a true "Cub" fan. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Bobby, wife Margaret, brothers Nathan, Charles, Beryl, Earl, and Johnny Carlson and sisters Ethel Hesse, Florence Jones, Delores Kruger, Lucille Benningsdorf and Edna Blunk. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Pollock and her husband, Robert of Denison, Iowa; two granddaughters, Lori Nelson and her husband, Steve of Harlan and Lanette Plambeck of Sioux City; four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Brooke and Brandon Nelson and Meghan Plambeck; one sister, Lois Adams of Dow City; sister-in-law, Doris Foster and husband, Art of Woodburn, Oregon and sister-in-law, Maxine Buschkol of Odebolt, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Lanette L. Plambeck and Rev. Ken Baughman officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymn "Peace in the Valley". Soloist was Eldon Hardekopf singing "Precious Lord' and "It's No Secret". Honorary pallbearers were Rev. Lanette Plambeck, Meghan Plambeck, Brianna Nelson, Brandon Nelson, Brooke Nelson, Lori Nelson and Steve Nelson. Pallbearers were Richard Rasmussen, Roger Rasmussen, Dennis Carlson, Norman Carlson, Dwayne Hesse, Lloyd Carlson and LeRoy Wonder. Military Honors were the American Legion Homer Hall Post #66, Charter Oak, Iowa.
