Edwards, aged 64 years, for a quarter of a century a well-known resident of Canonsburg and for twenty years actively identified with the business interests of the community, died at 3 o'clock this morning in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he was taken several weeks ago and where he underwent two operations recently for gland selling. His condition for several days had been regarded as serious, and his death early today was not unexpected. His integrity was never questioned, and he stood high in the estimation of the people of the community. Mr. Edwards, tho a native of Ohio, spent thirty-four of his sixty-four years as a resident of Canonsburg. He was born at St. Clairsville, Belmont county, February 1, 1856, a son of William and Mary (Nolin) Edwards. The father died when the son was eight years old. Mr. Edwards, when a young man of 20, left the farm on which he had been reared and went to Wheeling, where he entered the employ of McGee Bros., tiners and roofers, and remained with that firm for five years. In the spring of 1880 he embarked in business for himself at Unionport, Jefferson county, O., and remained there six years. He then went to Wellsburg, W. Va., and from there, in August, 1876, came to Canonsburg and continued to reside here. On coming to Canonsburg he accepted the foremanship for J. J. Van Eman, later J. J VanEman & Son, in the tinning and roofiing work. In January, 1904, he purchased this branch of trade from the VanEman firm and went into business on his own account. Three years later he admitted his son, Clarence H. Edwards, to partnership, and the business was conducted under the name of R. M. Edwards & Son. In 1881 Mr. Edwards was married to Miss Elizabeth Rittenhouse of Unionport, O., who, with a son, Clarence H. Edwards of Moninger, survives. Mr. Edwards was an active church member. In early life he be came a member of the Christian Church, but there being no congregation of that denomination in Canonsburg when he came here, he united with tho Central Presbyterian Church, later transferring his membership to the Methodists. However, after the organization here a year ago of the Church of Christ he again became a communicant of the Christian denomination.
