He was born on August 7, 1924 in Hicksville, Ohio the son of Clyde L. and Mearl (Conner) Cleland. He was a 1942 graduate of Hicksville High School. He was united in marriage to Barbara Reeb on December 31, 1949. He was a United States Army WWII veteran serving our country in the Philippines in the occupation of Japan. He was a quality control analyst at Dana Corporation – Ft. Wayne, Indiana for (30) years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church – Hicksville; Masonic Lodge # 478 – Hicksville; Lifetime member VFW Post #5665 – Sherwood; Past Commander VFW Post #3011 – Hicksville. He was an avid supporter of the Hicksville Historical Society; The Huber Opera House and Defiance County Humane Society. He enjoyed hobbies of woodworking and making model airplanes. He is survived by his wife Barbara; a son Mike (Kae) Cleland and two daughters Julie Cleland and Laura (Frank) Szabo all of Hicksville; (6) grandchildren; (8) great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Esther Cleland – Oldsmar, FL. He was preceded in death by a brother Glen and two sisters: Vida Beerbower and Leone Blosser. Funeral services are on Monday at 11:00 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home – Hicksville with Eulogist Virginia Beltz. Visitation is on Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 and after 10:00 on Monday at the funeral home. Burial is at Lost Creek Cemetery –Farmer Township with military honors by Sherwood VFW Post #5665.
