Young Fairchild would not consent to go in the water, but Robert Storrs undressed and passing along the bank to go in where the water was shallow, accidentally slipped, falling into the deep water. The boy could not swim and the fright of a sudden plunge into the water probably had the effect of making him utterly helpless and he drowned. Robert was a very interesting and intelligent little fellow, his age being about nine years; with a natural suavity of address and politeness he became a great favorite with older people; also, among his companions he was a general favorite, and was held in the highest esteem by this teacher. Coroner Hickman came down Wednesday evening and summoning a jury the following testimony was given as to the cause of death. Henry Fairchild, age 10 years, being duly sworn, deposes and says: About three o'clock Wednesday afternoon I was on my way to Mr. Ellis' to play when Robert Storrs motioned for me to come to him; he was sitting in Mr. Briggs' buggy under the shed by the warehouse; he begged me to go in swimming with him, but I refused, stating that I was afraid I would get the chills. I afterward went with him to the slough under the trestle work where undressed. He started to walk along the bank to get to the other side where it was shallow, and accidentally slipping, fell in the toe deep water. I then ran to inform Mr. Hoy at the depot, my sister and another lady was looking out of the depot window and I told them that Robert Storrs was drowned, they informed Mr. Hoy of the fact who went to the place as fast as he could. When he fell in I saw him go down and come up once, but I did not attempt to get him out because I had my clothes on. John Harrington being duly sworn said: About 3 ½ O'clock Wednesday afternoon I was informed that a boy was drowned in the slough west of the railroad depot. I immediately started for the place and shortly after I arrived the body was rescued from the water by Isaac Fincher. I at once recognized the boy to be that of Robert Storrs, stepson of John R Kelley. I assisted in dressing him. The body was the removed to the residence of his parents. Mr. Chas A. Hoy being duly sworn said that he corroborated the above testimony of Mr. Harrington as correct in every particular. They jury then gave the following verdict: We the undersigned Coroner's Jury, being impaneled and sworn to enquire into the cause of death of Robert N. Storrs, after examining the remains and hearing the testimony of witnesses, do find that the said Robert N. Storrs, aged 9 years came to his death in the town of Tehama, County of Tehama, and State of California about 3 o'clock on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 26th 1880, by accidental drowning in the slough that runs under the trestle work of the California and O.R.R. about 10 years west of the Depot. Funeral Service - The last rite paid to the drowned boy, Robert Storrs, took place in the Presbyterian Church, at Tehama, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral oration was delivered by the Rev. Henry Neate, and was most touching and impressive. A large number of his school companions attended in a body, and the pall-bearers were his late playmates. The funeral was largely attended by the friends of the family.
