Robert's fond rememberance of his Uncle George is "God damn, he was a mean son-of-a-bitch." In 1912/1913, Charles' brother Lyman came up to help with the hospitalization of his brother, George. At this time it was decided that Robert should spend some time with his Uncle George Pratt in Whitmore, Kansas. In November of 1913, Charlie gave Robert the money for the train ticket and his Aunt Clara put him on the train in Vermillion and he set off for Whitmore. He enjoyed his stay with Lyman but in 1915 returned to Vermillion and left with his brothers and sisters to join his father in Greenwood. In that same year they moved to West Butte, an area near Scalp Creek in Gregory County. In 1916, they moved back to Charles Mix County and Robert worked on the Primm and Porter Ranches. Robert was in the process of buying a farm when he was drafted in 1918. He sold his farm and reported for induction only to be held up due to a quarantine because of the Swine Flu epidemic. When the quarantine was over the war had ended and Robert went to Omaha to an automotive school in the Fall of 1819 and Spring of 1919. When he returned, he formed a partnership with his brother George and worked at this until the early 1950s when he and George retired. During their partnership, they ran a dancehall which was located at the site of the present park in Fairfax. Of small note, one of their regular bands was a little known group headed up by an obscure musician named Lawrence Welk, who was later to go on to WNAX Radio in Yankton and on to greater fame with his champagne music. Robert passed away while on vacation in Boise, Idaho at St. Alphonsus Hospital. His body was returned to Fairfax where services were conducted by the Reverend Lambert in the St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. He was laid to rest in the Bluff View Cemetery, just a few miles from the home he was born in.
