At least one family tree on Ancestry.com has a more explicit DOB of December 16, 1876 in Jefferson county, Iowa, but that entry is not explicity sourced (the three census citations have the year only, rounded). Because Iowa did not have birth records until 1880 forward, the exact DOB is subject to interpretation. Will just use 1877 in Iowa for this memorial pending clarification. ----------- Son of James M Frost (also buried in this cemetery; he remarried and buried with second wife) and Mary Eliza Thompson Frost (when she died she was buried in her paternal father's Thompson Cemetery in Jefferson County, Iowa). The WPA listing has Robert as being a "Civil War Veteran", however that would be difficult if he was born in 1877 (died at age 62 in 1939). That war service notation, it turns out, was in error - Robert was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. ----------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," May 16, 1939: ROBERT FROST, 62, DIES LATE TODAY Former Assistant Chief Of Fire Department Was Patient At Veterans' Hospital. Robert Frost 62, former assistant chief of the Ottumwa Fire department, died at the U.S. Veterans' hospital, Des Moines, at 1:15 p.m. today, following an extended period of ill health. After having served more than 33 years of the local fire department, Frost was retired about two years ago. He had been in poor health since that time, although his condition did not become critical until recently. Frost, a Spanish-American war veteran, was admitted to the hospital May 10. Mrs. Frost was at her husband's bedside at the time of his death. His residence here was at 182 North Moore street. Surviving are his wife, Maude; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Phipps of Topeka, Kan.,; a son, Robert, Jr., of Denver Colo. (sic. see: Robert J Frost); a granddaughter, Joan Phipps; a stepmother, Mrs. Nancy Frost of Ottumwa; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Curtis of North Bend, Neb.; four half sisters, Mrs. Celia Brouhard of Ottumwa, Mrs. Leanna Mitchell of Indianpolis, Ind., Mrs. Hazel Singleton of Muskegon, Mich., and Mrs. Helen Reeves of Ottumwa; and two half brothers, Clay and Lloyd Frost of Ottumwa. Services for Robert Frost, former Ottumwa assistant fire chief who died at the veteran’s hospital, Des Moines, Tuesday, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Johnson’s funeral chapel and at 3:30 o’clock in the Finley Avenue Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. V.L. Currier, assisted by the Rev. John Hastie. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. O.B. Nelson post No. 3 American Legion, will have a firing squad and bugler at the grave where full military services will be held. Mr. Frost was born in Fairfield December 19, 1876, the son of James and Mary Frost. For the last 50 years he had lived in Ottumwa, 34 of which had been spent in the fire department. He was the oldest man in point of service and at his retirement had progressed through the ranks from pipeman to captain to assistant chief. He was a member of the Ottumwa Firemen’s association. During the Spanish-American war he served as a private with Company G, 50th regiment of Iowa volunteer infantry. He enlisted April 26, 1898, and was discharged November 30, 1898. He was a member of Joseph Hayes camp, No. 21, Spanish-American war veterans. Surviving are his wife, Maude; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Phipps of Topeka, Kan.; a son, Robert, Jr., of Denver, Colo.; a granddaughter, Joan Phipps; a step-mother, Mrs. Nancy Frost of Ottumwa; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Curtis of North Bend, Neb.; four half sisters, Mrs. Celia Brouhard of Ottumwa, Mrs. Leanna Mitchell of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Hazel Singleton of Muskegon, Mich., and two half brothers, Clay and Lloyd Frost of Otutmwa.
