Read More	Obituary of Robert S. Howey (Born June 4, 1832 died August 18, 1905) In the closing of the eyes of Robert S. Howey in the long sleep of death, there was removed from the scene of the world, one of the pioneers of Clay County-and a man loved and esteemed by all. For some time Mr. Howey had been a sufferer from Bright's disease and that malady was the cause of his death, which occured at his home in Spirit Mound Township on Friday of last week, It was with genuine sorrow that the news of his passing was received by his friends andthe old time pioneers who came to this State in his company. Robert Singer Howey was born near Rouse's Point, Canada on June 4, 1832. He was one of a family of ten children of Isaac Howey and Nancy Singer: the father of English and the mother of German descent. Here on the farm he grew up to manhood. In 1856 he was united in marriage to Anna S. Hart at Simcoe, where they both lived at that time. The same year he and his wife and her people migrated to the Dtate of Wisconsin and settled near Portage. They remained here for four years, returning to the old home farm in canada in 1860, where they lifed til the Western Fever again so filled their mind that he and his wife and four daughters came over into the States during the Civel War in September of 1863 settling in Michigan. Here they lived till the spring of 1865 when he cam e west to the then Dakota Territory, an filed on the homestead in Spirit Mound Township which has ever since been his home, and on July 4, of that year his wife and 6 children arrived to take up the pioneer life with him. In 1881 his wife was removed by death, (leaving her husband with 10 children), for that better land on March8. One son of this marriage died in infancy. as an old pioneer, and after a solid foundation had been laid for a prosperous home he was at this time left alone with his children. On October 1, 1881 he was married again to Miss Hilda Goodburn of Postville, Iowa- who survives him with their four children, one daughter and three sons. One daughter dying in infancy. Of his first children, three crossed death's river vefore their father, Mrs Amanda M Tralle of Yankton, John E. of Castalia, and Adelbert of Vermillion. Of his children, all are grown up except the two younger lads. As an old pioneer he was among the few left in this county. Those who were best acquainted with him know of the sterling qualities of thi character. After but a few day's illness he was called by the Great Physician to Himself. On Friday morning August 18, he passed across the river leaving 11 children, 21 grandchildren, and 2 great grand children, with the wife and mother to mourn the loss of a dear husband and father. Of his family now living the children were all lpresent at the funeral, with the exception of the families of Mrs. Ella M Hartwell of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Mrs. Ollie Dye of Pullman, Nebraska. On Sunday a large concourse of friends and neighbors gathered at his late home to pat that last tribut4e of respect to one whom they knew and loved so well. Services were conductedc by Re. Messrs Craig S. Thoms and J S Stewart, and the remains were laid to rest in the Bluff Cemetary, To the surviving widow and the children the sympathy of the dommunity is extedd in their bereavement.
