April 1975 ~~~~~~~ Stanton Register 12-15-1927 Stanton County Pioneer Passes Away Sunday WAS A DEEP THINKER Robert Stuart Hume was a native of Scotland, born at Strathmore, October 25, 1836. He died in Stanton, Nebraska December 11, 1927, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 16 days. He was a son of John and Christina (Stuart) Hume, whose children were William, Ellen (Mrs. J. Bruse), Peter, John and Robert. The last named was the only one of the family who ever came to America. His boyhood was spent in his native town, and when 19 years of age he began to work as a slater, serving an apprenticeship of three years. In 1869, he came to America and in September of the same year to Stanton County where he took a homestead about 6 miles northeast of the town of Stanton. After having secured his land under the homestead act, he returned to Fremont and worked on the Union Pacific Railroad until the following spring , when he bought a yoke of oxen and after a journey of eight days, landed his family upon his homestead. He built a small cabin at Fremont, which he removed in the spring to his new home. As he had never been accustomed to farming, he did not make a very skillful teamster or plowman. However, he set to work with a right good will to build for himself and family a home. He often recalled with considerable amusement some of his first experiences as a husbandman. With the exception of the grass-hopper years, he was favored each recurring harvest with an abundant yield from the soil. On July 16, 1858, Mary A. Jamison, daughter of James and Margaret (Stuart) Jamison, became his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Hume were the parents of 10 children, three of them dying in infancy and Charles, the youngest of the family, dying about 19 years ago. Those living are: Margaret, now the wife of Elmer VanNess of Stanton; James of Lodge Pole, Nebraska; Robert of Tekamah; Johana, known to some of us as Josie, now Mrs. Jarland of Tekamah, Nebraska; William of Omaha, Nebraska; and Alexander of Gross, Nebraska. In the year 1898, he sold his farm and bought property in Stanton, where he has since resided. His wife died in March, 1919. During the last years of his life he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. VanNess, where he had every kindness shown him that one could wish in his declining years. Religiously, Mr. Hume was brot up in the rigid and cold-blooded faith of Calvinistic Scotch Presbyterianism. Some of those religious interpretations were deeply implanted into his mind during the plastic years of his boyhood life. When he came to maturer years his nature rebelled against them and he discarded them, not exactly as false, but as failing to meet the requirements of his mind. Mr. Hume was not an Atheist. He believed in a Supreme Being. When he moved to Stanton he was quite a regular attendant at the Congregational Church and continued so until his hearing became so impaired that he could no longer hear a discourse. He often apologized for his absence. His religion was Nature, Truth, Honor, Justice, Equality and Human Brotherhood. His mind was naturally adventurous as is indicated by his biography. Had he had access in his younger years to the more modern and adventurous interpretations of religion, he would doubtless have thot himself into a reasonable interpretation of religion. He was an inveterate reader. He was well posted in the science and literature of today, but like many others, his mind was so rigidly tethered to archaic interpretations of religion that he could not see the finer lines of religious truth except thru the distorted lens of a dying and dead theology. But now he has gone into the presence of Him who looketh not upon the outward appearance, but upon the heart. He is in the presence of one who determines our destiny not by what we say, but by what we are--"Shall not the Judge of all earth do right?" He leaves to mourn his departure, 4 sons, 2 daughters, 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He also has two nieces, Miss Christina and Nellie Bruce, living in the old home town in Scotland and with whom he corresponded frequently while he was able. Should this notice of his death get into their hands, we wish, as his friends in America, to express to them our sympathy. Mr. Hume was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and it was his request that the Brothers of this Order should have charge of his burial ceremonies which were held yesterday afternoon. This request was gladly performed. His Fraternal brother, Henry Shultz, furnished the music and J. J. Klopp, another Fraternal brother, delivered the discourse. Brother, J. J. Strahle had charge of the ceremonies and was assisted by the brethern.
