Read More	Roberta Marion Durbin was born Dec. 14, 1909, in Pomona, CA, to Cecil Earnest Houdyshel and Helen Lee (Cross) Houdyshel. She died Dec. 26,1991, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. She graduated from high school in Los Angeles and attended the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She then attended graduate school. During this time, she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and received the honor of membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She then worked as a teacher in Los Angeles County. On Feb. 3, 1936, she was married to James Franklin Durbin in Santa Ana, CA. Roberta was the daughter of famed horticulturist Cecil E. Houdyshel, who worked with Luther Burbank. They developed and supplied rare plant stock through his company's catalogue business at his ranch in La Verne, CA. Roberta wrote a column for the Wall Street Journal and the Omaha World-Herald and was a frequent contributor in the "Public Pulse" column of the World- Herald. She had a televised cooking show on KMTV in 1956. She also wrote gardening columns in the Emerson newspaper, The Malvern Leader and the Red Oak Express. She was known as the first licensed woman pilot in southwest Iowa. Roberta loved gardening which was witnessed by raising exotic flowers in her greenhouse, including orchids, bromeliad and cactus. She also enjoyed gourmet cooking and traveling domestically and abroad. She was a member of the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the English Speaking Union, Opera Omaha and Ak-Sar-Ben. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband J. Frank Durbin in 1986, a son Robert in 1954 and a sister Eleanor. She is survived by a son and daugherindaugher-in-law James F. and Teresa Durbin of Emerson; a daughter and son-in-law Mary Lou and Peter Stehr of Omaha, ME; six grandchildren James Franklin Durbin III, David Bristow, Douglas Bristow, Margaret Stehr, Robert Stehr and Catherine Stehr; two cousins and one niece. Private graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 30, at the Emerson Cemetery with the Rev. Carol Kress officiating. Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern was in charge of arrangements.
