Major Shelton was born January 12, 1947 in Surry County, NC, to the late Carl John and Daisy Elizabeth Griffin Shelton. He was a retired Salvation Army Officer after 35 years. Roger graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1965 and entered The School for Officer's Training in 1966. He was commissioned in June of 1968 in the Messengers of Faith Session. Roger married Ann Paul in 1969. He and Ann held the following appointments together: Fayetteville, NC; Winston-Salem Southside Corps, North Carolina; Thomasville, North Carolina; Charlotte-Belmont, North Carolina; Henderson, NC; Greenwood, SC; Rocky Mount, NC; Goldsboro, NC; Burlington, NC and Winston-Salem Citadel. Together they had two children, Alysia and Jonathan. Ann was promoted to Glory on October 27, 1994 after 25 years of marriage. Majors Roger and Barbara Shelton were married on November 2, 1996. Their first appointment together was Salisbury, NC in November 1996 until May 2000. Surviving are his wife, Major Barbara Barton Shelton of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Alysia Ann Shelton, Salisbury, NC , Maggie H. Wagoner and husband, Matthew, Princeton, W.VA, Dedie H. Blackburn and husband, Greg Cleveland, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan Andrew Shelton, Charlotte, NC, Daniel Barton Hearn and wife, Mesha, Winston-Salem, NC; two grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carlene S. Tolbert and husband, Jack, Mt. Airy, NC, Elizabeth S. Wind and husband, Barry, Franklin, NC; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred G. Shelton and wife Leigh, Salisbury, NC, Steve W. Shelton and wife, Jeanette, Mt. Airy, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Major Ann Paul Shelton. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy.
