He was born July 13, 1921, in Beatrice, to Earl Evert and Alma Frances (Pefferman) White. He was the oldest of seven children. Read More	Thanks to contributor #41232239 Roland Albert White, 88, of Ellis, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at the Beatrice Manor Care Center. He was born July 13, 1921, in Beatrice, to Earl Evert and Alma Frances (Pefferman) White. He was the oldest of seven children. While the family moved a number of times to different locations in Gage and Pawnee counties during his youth, he always considered the Ellis area home. He started school at a one-room schoolhouse southeast of Ellis and later attended the Ellis School. He attended Beatrice High School through his junior year. Working to help his family, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in Pawnee County for a time. At age 20, on Feb. 3, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served at several posts in the continental United States while receiving training, including at Fort Lewis, Wash. From there, he volunteered as a gunner on a civilian ship, the S.S. Heather, which was stationed at Umnak Island, Alaska. The boat patrolled the Aleutian Islands and moved supplies up and down the Alaskan coastline. He later served with the military police at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was discharged from military service Nov. 2, 1945, with the rank of corporal. He was a member of Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion in Beatrice and in 2008 received his 50-year membership pin. After World War II, he returned to Beatrice and went to work, along with his father, at Dempster Manufacturing. He worked there for more than 40 years, retiring in July 1986 from his position as a No. 1 shipper. He was a long-time member of the International Association of Machinists Local #1146. On Sept. 20, 1956, he married Doris Marie Peggy Jones in Geneva. To this union was born a daughter, Jane, in 1965. He was a devoted husband and father, but also a beloved Unk to his many nieces and nephews. He was baptized by immersion April 1, 1956, at the First Christian Church in Beatrice and transferred his membership to the Ellis United Methodist Church, Sept. 10, 1961. He served the Ellis church in many capacities over the years, including one of his favorites as a preschool Sunday school teacher. He always had a smile and, generally, candy for the youngsters each Sunday and sometimes let one or more help ring the church bell before the morning service. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, especially sharing his crafted items with others. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and just being outdoors. He liked to follow local sports teams, especially the summer baseball programs. Survivors: daughter, Jane of Ellis; sisters, Lois (Fletcher) Lampe and Mary Lou White, both of Beatrice; sister-in-law Ruth Winter of Buffalo Center, Iowa; brother-in-law, Dean Jones and wife, Dorothy, of Lincoln; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Peggy White on March 17, 2008; his parents, Earl and Alma White; brother, LaVerne White; sisters, Ilah Winter, Doris (Borgman) Rohr and Elaine Knabe; brothers-in-law, Donald Fletcher, Richard Lampe, Andrew Winter, Wilbur Borgman, Harlan Rohr, Jeff Knabe, Dale Jones, Otto Wiechmann and Allen Keith; sisters-in-law, Audra (Wiechmann) Keith and Cecilia Jones. Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice with the Rev. Mary-Ellen Gaither officiating. The body will lie in state at the Harman-Wright Mortuary Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. then at the church one hour preceding services. Burial: Liberty Cemetery, Liberty.
