Much loved and admired by his four children and five grandchildren, “Rollie” was a 20th century force of nature. Much loved and admired by his four children and five grandchildren, “Rollie” was a 20th century force of nature. Born in Bear River, February 16, 1929, one of five children of a disabled First World War veteran, he, like his older brother, was sent off to make something of himself. Roland studied at Gordon College, Boston, Toronto Bible College, Acadia and Dalhousie Universities, earning his BA, BD, BEd and MEd. Roland served for more than 20 years as a Baptist church pastor in Country Harbour, NS, Grand Falls, NB, Arcadia, Billtown and Barrington Passage, NS, followed by 20 years as a teacher and guidance counselor. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union executive for six years, during which time he fought tirelessly for the economic and employment rights of teachers. He also served as president of the Shelburne County Local. Forced into retirement by ill health—he was profoundly deaf from the age of 11—he applied himself to historical research, serving as a member of the Atlantic Baptist Convention historical committee and the Barrington Historical Society. He published several learned papers and a seminal history of Baptists in Atlantic Canada. He also served as a regional vice-president for the Canadian Red Cross. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Laura Burpee; also predeceased by his parents Ross and Pearl; his half sister, Marion Dunn, sister Evelyn and brother Arthur. He is survived by his brother Howard (Jean) and his children, Paul (Linda), Halifax; Rev. Marilyn, Fredericton, NB; Patricia, Mulgrave; and Peter (Patricia), Antigonish. He also deeply influenced the lives of his grandchildren, Paige Hoveling (Dan), Kelsey, Bob, Sam and Tim. His family wishes to thank Nancy Quinlan, his caregiver for more than a decade, for the selfless devotion and companionship she provided. Rollie would be thrilled at any memorial donations his many friends might choose to make to Temple United Baptist Church in Barrington Passage, a community within a community that he loved and supported for almost six decades. He’d be even happier if you took an hour one Sunday and attended a service. Final care has been entrusted to Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m on Monday, January 11. A celebration of Roland’s life will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, Rev. Derek Melanson presiding.
