Barnes, one of the community's most prominent citizens, died at his home in Asbury Friday morning of last week, following an illness of several months, at the age of 62 years. He was the son of the late Clarence and Ethel Lankford Barnes of Worcester County and the husband of Mrs. Kate Lawson Barnes of this city. A former resident of Pocomoke City, he moved to Crisfield with his family about 14 years ago, and operated the confectionery and soft drinks store known as the "Sweet 5hop" in the Arcade Theatre building. A man of high character and probity, Mr. Barnes was a man of strong opinions which were respected. He was friendly, accommodating, energetic, a very likeable person who had friends in all walks of life who enjoyed his companionship. He had built a successful retail business here and was interested in the things which benefited the city and the community. He extended a helping hand whenever and wherever he could, and his friendship was warm and cordial. Funeral services were held in Asbury Methodist Church last Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Leslie Werner. Interment was in the family lot in Asbury cemetery. Bearers were Weldon Massey, Sr., Jesse Evans, Ray Parks, Ernest Maddrix, J. Herman Sterling and H. Parker Tull. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate Lawson Barnes, three daughters, Mrs. Julian B. Whittington, Miss Lillian Barnes and Mrs. John W. Parks, Jr., all of Crisfield; one son, Rome L. Barnes, Jr., of Salisbury; a sister, Mrs. D.
