Quakenbush): Merriam Man, 22, Drowns A 22-year-old Merriam man drowned about 2 p.m. yesterday in a private lake in Black Swan Estates in Shawnee. The body of Ronald Sledd, 22, of 8812 W. 47th Terrace, was pulled from the lake about 4 p.m. by divers of the Olathe Water Rescue Squad. The lake is at the northern end of Black Swan Drive which runs through the subdivision from 51st. A concrete swimming pool has been constructed in the water on the south side of the lake. Sledd was swimming with friends in the lake alongside the pool when he went under in about 40 feet of water. Harold Morris, Shawnee fire chief, said. Friends who were swimming with Sledd were trying to locate him when authorities arrived, Morris said. Three youths, Michael Plumberg, 19, of 5306 Nieman, Shawnee, John Gallagher, 18 of 2812 S. 43rd, Kansas City, Kansas, and Kenneth Holmes, 16, of 7012 Hallett, Shawnee, said they were diving into the lake from a board on the edge of the concrete pool. The three youths decided to swim out to a platform in the lake about 50 feet away, they said, but Sledd stayed behind. At first, Sledd couldn't decide whether to swim out to the platform, Plumberg said. Sledd then started to swim and he was laughing and floating on his back, Plumberg said. Sledd went under water when he was about halfway between the pool and the platform, Gallagher said. He returned to the surface, went down a second time and stayed down, Gallagher said. The three youths said they then jumped into the water and tried to find SLedd but were unable to see him in the murky water. Elmer Sledd, the victim's father, said his son was a good swimmer. "He's been swimming for a long time. He must have had a cramp." Sledd was graduated in 1972 from Shawnee Mission North High School. Sledd was a lifelong area resident. He also leaves his wife, Mrs. Denise M. Sledd, and a daughter, Andrea L. Sledd, both of 5618 Hadley, Merriam; his mother, Mrs. Lucille Sledd of the home, and a half-brother, Larry Moore, 5016 W. 49th, Roeland Park. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Amos Chapel; burial in Shawnee Mission Cemetery, Shawnee. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
